Just got this little guy Friday. I absolutely love him! But I have no idea what wrasse he is. Can someone please ID for me? He has some blotches on him but kinda looks like some bluer lines are starting to show through. Sorry for the blurry pictures, still trying to get the hang of reef photography.

more like 7"

you're sure it's ornatissimus and not claudia? i've been searching for claudia forever to no avail. i always find h. biocellatus and h. ornatissimus :(

ornatissimus is no doubt beautiful, but apparently they really have a thing against CUC. All CUC. and wrasses aren't their favorite

@evolved wrote this about them in the all about wrasse thread

H. ornatissimus "Ornate Wrasse": Common available and inexpensive. This one is also commonly (and incorrectly, IMO) labeled as a "Christmas Wrasse", but this species is VERY different from H. claudia. This one gets much larger (7"), and typically gets somewhat mean once mature. Also LOVES motile inverts. Avoid this one for a peaceful reef.

I tried posting a video. It got to 100% and then it canceled it.

that's a male h. biocellatus. great reef fish!

is it eating? the mouth looks kinda odd
He was eating at the store. When I got him home raising the SG from 1.018-1.025. Monday night when he came out for and hour and Tuesday when he came out for 4hrs.
What is the common name aside of the Latin name?

red line wrasse, max size of about 4-5"

i have one, it's a great fish. eats just about anything. decimates pods. pretty invert safe. i have it with a yellow wrasse and they're both perfectly peaceful with each other despite both being males

Awesome! Thanks for the help. I paid $45 for it. I absolutely love it. I honestly don't care if I over paid for it. I am sure the prices are up on them, because of the whole Covid-19. I am happy to know he is not going to get 7". That would have been bad since I have a 65g 3'. He seems like he will be a good tankmate.

As you've already learned, that's H. biocellatus.
here's a post by evolved that describes the difference between the three christmas wrasses. i still struggle to tell the difference between ornatissimus and claudia in real time, though. apparently when ornatissimus gets stressed the chain pattern breaks up and looks like claudia, those sneaky punks.
There's still an article in that, waiting for me. Someday...

Could be an old injury.

Should be okay for a 65g, but that's about the minimum I'd put one in.

Tricky one, as it's a transitioning Thalassoma. Any idea what area of the world it came from? I am ~90% sure it's Thalassoma bifasciatum.
One of the pencil wrasse, but which one?
The shape of the head rules out that genus. ;)
