Another newbie question here.

I have two tanks, one is a 21g cube I started in early June, the second is a 150g that I bought used from a member on the forum. When I picked up the tank the owner said he hadn't really been keeping up with it as much. It had a bit of algea and high nitrate but I am working that down.

Anyway what I am wondering about is the live rock. In the 150g, with the LEDs off just under normal interior lighting all the liverock is green. Makes me think algea of course. In my 21g cube I put in dry rock originally, but bought a piece of liverock which appears purple under the same lighting.

My theory is that the liverock in my 150g is simply covered in green algea and doesn't have any of the coralline algea on it.

My only question really is if any of this seems strange. None of the fish seem upset and the corals that are in there are acting fine. This is more of of a level setting question. I appreciate the help as always.

The image with the more vibrant purple is the liverock I bought in the 21g.

Green on live rock is perfectly normal and healthy.

It is a bit lacking in coralline but it’s a sign of a healthy rock.

Even if a rock looks white in blue light, in white natural light, it will have a green tinge.

As for your live rock, looks like one of those man made rock with fake purple coloring that wears off with time.

I say that because only the “raised” portions like the edges have been worn off white. Due to water and critters munching on it.

Probably not good quality live rock

Thanks for the info. I won't worry anymore about the green. Regarding the second image that is correct I bought that at my LFS when I set up the tank, it is man made and bought dry. The rock that the zoa frag on is live rock and I bought it later to seed coralline growth. That is the one I was referencing.

Thanks for the response!
