Is it ok to wrap live rock in newspaper? Will it cause problems if we are just going from one side of town to the other?

Can't you just put it in a bucket or cooler with some tank water? That should better preserve any life on the surface of the rock.

Agreed, why risk having any more die off than you need. Just grab a bucket with a lid.
