Not necessarily, buy the biggest tank you can afford. A larger tank is always going to be more easier than a smaller tank when it comes to keeping things stable because of the larger water volume. Anyways, welcome to R2R!!!

We have a 75 gallon display and 20g sump, a good size.
Started with that 7 years ago.

I always have thought a 40-80 range for a first tank is reasonable. The larger the tank, the easier to balance but also the more money it takes to operate.

One way to measure the size of the tank needed is to decide which fish you want to keep. Some fish need very large tanks.

The larger the tank, the more stable the water chemistry. So for a beginner, larger tanks are easier to keep.

Also, please decide which kind of fish you want to keep and design your system around those fish.

Do you have any ideas of the fish you want to keep? If not, you can visit the local fish store to get ideas.
