I’ve had this magnifica for about a month:

The first 2 and last pics are about 2 weeks old and the other 3 are today.
It has seemed healthy, but I’ve noticed in the last week or so it looks like it is starting to bleach. I currently have black boxes about 18” over my 150. I have them at about 40 for whites and 100 for blues. I know bleaching is generally lighting related and that mags need high light, so I suspect I may need to increase intensity and/or add additional….. but…. Since it’s relatively new, I don’t want to make it worse if I actually need to lower the light and ramp up to acclimate the mag to the existing lights. Thoughts? Do I increase or decrease lighting as a first move?

I’m going to try reducing the light and ramping back up I guess.

So, I’m thinking I should have acclimated to my lighting more slowly and I’ve reduced whites to 20….should I reduce blues too?

@OrionN @Eagle_Steve
I’d love your insights on this, this is my first mag and I want to make the right move. Much appreciated!
Typically a mag will move if the light is too strong or too weak. It does look healthy though, so that is good.

Also, I have had them lose a little bit of color in the first few months and then get it back. Not sure if it is the stress of harvest and shipping that causes them to start bleaching or if it was my lights. I would assume stress, as I always start them down low and let them walk up to where they want to go.

Was this nem treated with antibiotics? If so, that can also cause some bleaching, but typically not very much.

In my opinion, for what’s its worth lol, I would leave the lights alone and continue to monitor the nem. If healthy, it will find a spot it likes and should color back up over time.

Thanks, I didn’t treat it as it appeared healthy when I got it. Sounds good, I’ll leave things alone and just keep an eye on it. Thanks again!

Report back and tag me if any issues.

Also, the last 2 mags I have had come in have not needed treatment either. Appears they are actually shipping in a lot more water than they used to. Makes the price go up, but looks promising for getting healthier nems. Hopefully it stays that way. Great nems and tough if you can get them healthy.

+1 for leaving it alone and seeing what happens. Is it eating? I also noticed you didn’t report what PAR it’s under?

Thanks! I haven’t tested with a par meter, so idk exactly. Yes, it is eating. It hasn’t moved to get more or less light, so I’ll just keep watching it.

So, it’s been about another 10 days or so and the anemone just doesn’t look happy. It’s kind of deflated most of the day and looks even more bleached. The mouth is closed tight (not gaping at all). It seems to inflate more at night after lights out which seems weird? I attached some pics. I added a red foot mag about 9 days ago (found a good deal I couldn’t pass up) and it seems happy thus far. I’ve attached some pics, would you suggest continuing with just watching or making some sort of change?

@Eagle_Steve, hi, hope you’re having a good weekend. The mag is now completely white on the tentacles and oral disc. The foot still has some color. It is never fully inflated. It’s still firmly attached to the rock and hasn’t moved. Mouth is closed. I’d appreciate your advice, keep with watching, adjust lighting, treat with Cipro, other advice?

I would recommend treating with cipro. I'm thinking Steve would as well. Has it moved at all recently? It still looks to be mostly inflated which is a good sign. But if it were mine I would qt and treat it.

It looks sick to me. I’ve seen BTAs do similar things when introduced to other BTA strains. Shrinking and misshapen tentacles suggests the anemone is diverting a lot of energy towards survival. I would treat with cipro for a full week and quarantine it for a couple weeks afterwards to be safe.

Thanks, appreciate the advice. Are you saying the other mag may be harming it?

Maybe not the other mag, but there could be a pathogen in the tank or incompatibility with another anemone in the system. It's hard to identify the exact cause, but in my experience treatment with cipro and isolation helps.

Thanks. I’m on day 4 of treatment….it’s looked pretty bad the last couple of days. I’m not 100% sure, but it might look slightly better today (I might just being hopeful)? Here are a couple of pics I just took. It’s decided to sit on the egg crate in a position hard to get a good photo. Any thoughts on progress or outlook?
