It's with great disappointment that I've decided to pull the plug on 32 years of Reefing....the last 2 years have taken their toll on my wallet and on my moral...

On Thursday June 16 around 2-3 AM for a second time our Marineland 200DD Tank gave away....bottom seal....and this time it was catastrophic failure, water came rushing down with lots of pressure and spayed the wall with water that made it's way to the electric Outlet....causing a small electric fire....could have been worst if I did not wake up on the smell before the fire alarm triggered. End result is devastating to both the basement (Coark Floor to be redone) and the entire Family moral....the kids specially took it very hard...the lost of all the fish had a impact on them....for me it's groundhog day....same thing happened in Dec 2013...

So that is it....everything that could be carried out by 1 or 2 person is now out in the garage or in the bin....I'll sell the Surviving hardware like skimmer and lights, couple pumps but that's about it.....Apex was fried, MP10 Controller gone, Same with the Return Pump controller (power supply exploded) ....at the end the lost in $$$$ will be probably be over 20K between the Tank, Corals, Pumps, Fished, House Damage.....

All this left me we a very bitter taste....now lets see how good is the Marineland warranty and how quick they will get their act together.

Screw the warranty, you should be suing them for 20k+.

Why sue? This is the problem with our thought process. It's always sue first. Contact the company, tell them what happened, provide supporting docs, and give them the opportunity to cover all the issues. Marineland is a large company who I am sure has product liability insurance. I certainly can't say the same for other custom tank builders.

Agreed...and honestly I'm drained....lawyers are like Sharks and I have seen enough saltwater lately

That's usually the first step. Send a certified letter.

@ReefMaverick ,
Sorry to hear about your loss. Glad to hear that your family and home are safe...this is the most important result today!

I know this is not the time but there is a reason I only use acrylic in tank construction...this is the reason. I had only one tank failure in over 20 years of fabrication and I made changes to make sure it never happened again. Yes they might scratch easier but a proper acrylic tank never explodes.

Unfortunatly you have no warranty with Marineland glass tanks beyond the warranty period and then it only covers the tank and not all the other losses. This is a standard in the aquarium market. Many acrylic aquariums have longer warranty periods but only cover against leakage or breakage due to manufacturer defect.

I wish you all the best in the future. Life is risk and risk leads to learning and reward. I hope you can find a way to enjoy the hobby again in the future. I would just avoid Marineland due to your experiances. The odds of you having two tank failures by the same manufacturer seems out of the ordinary.

Well First Tank they were great they covered everything....and this is what they are saying they will do.....remains to be seen....and those Marineland 200DD and 300DD are prone to this leaking.....bottom seam is not preperly done (Got this info from LFS that got sued and after insurance investigation it's what came up).

False. You can't waive your liability. If he filed a claim against his homeowners you can bet they will be going after Marineland. Most areas have what is known as Implied Warranty which trumps a manufacturers warranty.

Yeah, never until it does. Same can be said for glass tanks.

I'm so sorry to hear of the disaster. Wishing you and your family the best, and a speedy reconstruction of damaged areas!

As a professional installer of thirteen years I can say that both have potential to fail over time. I've covered several acrylic tank failures from leading vendors in the US. A proper tank of either material never explodes. These days you have to twist my arm hard to have us install an acrylic aquarium, unless it's a very, very large.

:(

I'm very sorry to hear you've been thru this not once but twice. It seriously makes me reconsider using a Marineland 300DD as my future upgrade.
