I will try to regurgitate some information. The wooden air stones don't produce more nano bubbles with more air volume flowing through them. Nano bubble production is based off of pressure. The needle valve allows you to open up the air pump to increase pressure, but then reduce flow via the needle valve. It can be done without the needle valve, but with it is better.
This does not compute in my head. It should be more pressurized before the needle valve, but not after, thus not through the air stone. To me it seems less air through the air stores gives smaller bubbles, so any airline needle valve (the cheapo $1 ones) should do the same trick?
Question for the guys who have done this. I am testing with an extra skimmer pump I have before I buy more components. My overflow is only on one side of the tank. How to get bubbles everywhere?
