Hey y'all,
(Back story) New reefer here, been in fresh for over 20+ years though. 40 gallon saltwater Aqua Top (tank is now 5 months old) is where the question relates. All levels are stable Tank does not look like the pictures anymore.
Buddy of mine finally got me into saltwater. Here is where our dilemma is at. Got live rock, live sand and put a bottle of bacteria in the tank to get it going. I noticed that after a month I started to get this Algae, so I did some digging and the fern like algae appeared to be byprosis. ( I think it is, buddy is 50/50). I also in this time frame got some cope's, nassarius (4), tronchus snails(6-8) Midas Blenny(v1 - Lenny) Fireblood Cherry Shrimp (Larry) and 2 clowns(Marline,Nemo) at the time of these pictures.
Here is where the fun comes into play. Picture 1 is what the tank looked like with the white light on. (gotta love new tank setups)
So I added the fish, snails, shrimp and copes next.
I started noticing immediately after about 3 days adding the blenny that the big green patch in the front right of pic 1 started to disappear. So every time I fed him normal frozen clam/shrimp he would poop immediately and the poop was green. The same color as the that green algae.. So as the months went on, I was able to capture a video. Please see the attachments of him after he would rip it off the rock, he (blenny) would then consume it.
So this leads me to my general questions.
1.) Is that Byprosis
2.) if so i thought nothing eats it?
My buddy doesn't believe it and I told him recently that the midas blenny v2 (two versions. wife left the lid open one day and Lenny v1 met the light at the end of the tunnel) was eating some bubble algae I obtain with from one of those auto feeders over feeding while I was on vacation and he said you need to post this and get other people thoughts on this. Even a fish store owner was baffled to see the video of the midas consuming the algae. Lenny v2 is going after the remaining algae in the tank today and I am down to 1% left in the tank. In 5 months I have only cleaned the tank twice where I went in and did the siphon thumb trick. Lmk everyones thoughts. With the bubble algae I only saw lenny v2 do it once last night so I was not able to get it on video.
Additional info:
* I also now have a flame angel that has pretty much cleaned up all the hair algae I got from some coral integrations. Flame Angel is only a month old in the tank (Flo)
* I only feed once a day in hand held fashion. Frozen every other day and pellet in between
* Chemistry is where is should be.
- What I Test - Ca / Mag / PO4/ Alk /PH /Nitrate /Nitrite / Ammonia - All normal levels currently and former outside of a hicup. Did have a spike of nitrate and PO4 when I came back from vacation but that was due to the autofeeder.
Let me know your thoughts!
