Today I am undertaking a major computer overhaul. New motherboard, CPU, memory, video card...the whole shebang! Baring any serious disasters it should go as planned...if not it may be a while before I am up and running again! Everyone please say a prayer for a speedy computer recovery!

Looks like I came through relatively unscathed!! Still in the middle of updating the drivers and what not! This was an interesting ugrade because I decided to try and do it without doing a clean install on WinXP! So after upgrading the motherboard, CPU, Ram, and video card...I had to do a Windows Repair Install so windows could recognize my new hardware! Going to be working out the bugs for a little while...but here is how it turned out!

I went from a:

Soyo KT333 motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 2200
Corsair DDR 512 MB Ram
ATI Radeon Pro 128MB DDR video card

to...

ASUS A8N-SLI Premium motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 3800
Corsair 1GB DDR Ram
ATI Radeon Pro 512 MB DDR Video card

I also picked up a 250GB SATA drive I am going to use in a little while by cloning my other drives onto this one...but that project is for another day!!!

How much did it cost you to do those upgrades Stix? I used to always build my own stuff but the prices of computers are so low these days that I've just been buying my systems. That, and I guess the fact that all computers in my house are laptops these days.

I spent about $600 on hardware. I like building them because they are more upgradable that way. I can upgrade the processor with ease and still be up to date, or add another GB of RAM...or 6 more hard drives for that matter! The out of the box computers are really nice, but you are almost stuck with the configuration they give you hardware wise.

I finally broke down and bought a computer... First one, but I figured I couldn't start over from the one I built in college without going deep in the hole (everything has changed since then-only the tower would still be useable;)). Of course, building your own gives you exactly what you want and nothing else does that.
