Hello all, I'm a larger person (318 pounds at 6'2) I have a big frame so I'm not giant but still it's not healthy. I'm joining my local Air National Guard to change my life around, recently I lost control of myself and went on a bit of a eating spree this weekend, gained a few pounds. Really starting to doubt myself that I can do it. My recruiter is saying I'm being too hard on myself, that I need to eat better but it's okay to stumble, I still can't help but feel discouraged. He recommends doing a reward system for completing small goals such as 5 miles ran a week, or going a whole week or two eating small healthy portions. I'm thinking of doing like a "reefreward" system. Any ideas? I'm thinking maybe every two weeks of eating healthy I "get" to "spend" a hundred dollars on my lighting system (really just putting it in my savings but make it seem like I'm buying a portion of it). Any other interesting ideas I could do for myself?

First off, lifes not fair. Doesn't matter how many people say they don't judge or you're fine as your are. There all lying on the inside. You're always judged until someone decides if you are useful to them or not and then your judged by that standard from then on.

Second, as one that struggled with weight when I first joined the military, I can say that others in your unit will help you out to keep you honest. Make friends and do activities together. They should have morning pt you can go join in. Might seem weird at first, but you will come to love the friendship.

Hate to say it, but change comes from dire situations or something inside us. When you go to bed at night the only one you have to answer to is your self. Did you make positive choices today? Did you change something you normally do with something else? Its small steps to get rolling. Step out side your comfort zone and check it out.

Discouragement from inside is just your mind struggling to make the change. Its telling you we should have done this or not. Listen to it. It will guide you. Just like I use to tell my minions, your capable of anything, until I say your not.

Don't feel embarrassed or discouraged. Hold your head high and start your new path, yes you will stumble, but it will get easier. Cut out all fast food and pop/soda/beer, you will start dropping weight no problem. Also instead of 2-3 big meals a day, break it up into 7-9, 24 hours a day. 2-3 keeps your body in starvation mode and it stores it, if you have a little food in you at all times, your metabolism will adjust for it.

You got this man, only thing holding you back is you and your comfort zone. After you get use to the small changes, your comfort zone will adjust, you will get more confident in your self and the impossible will seem easy and enjoyable.

Everyone is equal. Some are better at things than others, some are just naturally skinny, some beautiful, some rich, some poor. Under the scope, were all the same. Never feel any different because you feel like you got the short end of the stick. My life was a up hill battle my whole time. At 40 I finally got it all together and was actually happy for once in my life.

Far as rewards, first day you do everything right, you will go to bed the happiest you've been in a long time. Then you will want that feeling all the time.

When I got up to 5'10" and 250 I mentally snapped. Started eating small meals 8 times a day, substituted 2 protein shakes in with it. Worked the heavy bag every other day in the safety of my garage and went jogging at dusk every night, 1 mile on heavy bag nights, 4 miles on the off nights. Felt really good and more positive. Lost 50lbs in 3 months.

Keep us posted man! Really want to see you make it. Best times of my life were in the military, also the worst/saddest. But thats how it works.

I say you can do it!

Make small changes. Give up sodas or crappy snacks/desserts. Change them for something healthy, cheese sticks, boiled eggs, jerky, something protein filled so it will make you feel full. It's the small steps that will make a big impact. Definently reward yourself for doing well and going the extra mile! Life is meant to be lived, just try to make yours longer than it was going to be! Rooting for you!

wow thank you, I really appreciate the support. I might actually go look if they have that morning PT up at the base

Remember that you won't be 190 tomorrow morning. Make sustainable changes and stick to it so that you are making consistent progress toward your goal. There are two things that really helped me out, a kitchen scale and the My Net Diary Pro app. The scale helps me to recognize portion sizes. I used the scale and app to show my wife that I was making myself a chicken breast because the spaghetti she was making for dinner would wither be a calorie bomb or leave me starving. Learn how to adjust your portions so that you are fulfilled with reasonable calories. Get a cooking app, my preferred one is AllRecipes, so that you can find new flavors that are enticing.

One last thing that helped me a bit is using small dishes. A small dish looks like it has more food than a larger dish with the same amount of food and acts like a portion control assistant. Also, I need to buckle down again. I fell off the wagon this summer and stopped losing weight. I'd like to lose 30-50 pounds and be a muscular 180-200.
