So I am sorting out stuff for my new sump and came across this miracle mud. Has anyone used it? Just wondering if it is any good. I am only doing a fish only tank with artifical inserts but still want to have everything in place.

In short. It serves as a fine grain substrate bed to assist in denitrification, especially if you’re carbon dosing. It’s mostly a fine powder quartz. I use Fiji mud which serves a similar purpose. I won’t be using it on my
Next tank. It’s got some positives, but the negative is you really shouldn’t disturb it so you have to kind of leave that Chamber of the sump alone

Thanks I'm really new to sumps so trying to figure out the best way to do one. I have a protein skimmer and bio reactor but thought for the middle chamber I would do a refugium with some live rock from my current display, then saw this miracle mud and some cheato then last chamber the return pump. In my current external filter I have purgien, phosguard and carbon plus matrix but don't see how I use this in the new sump. I really am all new to this and don't want to do it wrong. So any tips is greatly appreciated!
Thanks for the info. So am I better off with something else instead? Do I use a different substrate. If there is something different I would be interested. As @Bpb stated above, there are positives and negatives. Many people swear by it and many people swear AT it. Personally, I've never used it but, if I were to, I think I would place it in some type of container then put it in the sump. Something like a long, low Tupperware or something. This way, it can be removed easily enough and/or swapped out.
That’s good to know, what are you using now?I used it for two years and stopped. I noticed no real gains from it.

Thanks, I was going to use the sand bed I have now plus extra bags to build it up to be a deep sand bed especially for the goby. :)My advice would be to keep this simple, at least at first. Nothing in your sump except the skimmer, heater, and return pump. For your main tank, if the artificial inserts are going to be plastic (as opposed to ones made from porous aragonite rock), then I would consider a sand bed. That'll be a requirement if you want wrasses. If you do go with a sandbed, get the CaribSea "special grade" reef sand - it has larger particles that won't get blown around by power heads. And rinse the snot out of it in ordinary tap water when you get it; you can use bottled bacteria for the cycle, and the small amount of bacteria that comes with the sand just isn't worth the silt-storm of adding the sand directly to the tank.
