My SPS & Clam Tank

I'm wondering if zoas getting on the clam's rock would become a problem...
My clam buddy @MartinM had some incredible pieces. We messaged a lot back in the day. I haven’t seen him online in a while.

These are his:

Wow, ballsy growing Caulerpa right there!

A small clam tour. I have more on the other side of the tank.

Beautiful tank. Love all your clams. Sadly im afraid to try one because of my Moorish Idol.

Moorish idols are ruthless. I’ve never seen a fish more “nonreef safe.”

How long have you had yours? They are a showpiece fish in and of itself.

I was under the impression these types of clams get huge... are there some varieties that stay smaller?
Maxima clams are the second smallest, reaching about 6-8”.

Crocea is the smallest tridacna clam.

It’s the derasas that get massive.

These are my favorite photos.

I need more real estate for additional clams. I wedge them in between the acro stalks. It keeps them from falling from the high flow.

Only about 3 months or so. It likes to eat favia. But has left most everything else alone. Stunning fish. Eats pellets and frozen. Just def not reef safe.

Noob here, I was reading the sticky in clam section by skinz about clam care, and read they needed pristine water, 0 nitrate and less than .03 phosphates but I thought that tanked nutrients were basically asking for a cyano/dino outbreak? What do you keep yours at?

That is not correct. They like corals also intake phos and nitrate or ammonia.

Hey

That information is outdated and does not hold true. My clams thrive with more than detectable nutrients.

My nutrient range is very wide. I’ll take some tests tonight. 🙂

My clams thrive are not dead and I have what many would consider very high phosphate, 0.52. Nitrates are like 7

I had clams when my system was in the 75-100ppm nitrate and around 1ppm phos. They did not die and they did put on size as evident by new shell growth. Was or is that a good idea? idk probably not but with large not reef safe fish tied into the system ( bad idea) I could not keep up. Got rid of 2 30" bamboo sharks and 10-15 angels, triggers, a puffer and a couple large wrasses and maintenance became much easier. lol
