My SPS & Clam Tank

I replaced several rocks with dry rocks on July 13th because of a clove polyp infestation that I didn’t want to treat with medications:

What the heck?

The Achilles was doing fine. No diseases. No spots. It was eating nori. Yeah, he wasn’t a perfectly normal fish. He was very timid and didn’t seem like he was adapting well. He would hide a lot and was scared of me.

Anyway, he was doing okay. He didn’t eat at first, but eventually took nori, but he never touched anything else: mysis, LRS, brine, etc.

Today I woke up, took some par measurements on the right side of the aquarium. Then, I moved to the left and saw the Achilles, completely lifeless. Just wedged in a rock.

I’ve never had something like this happen in my life. I don’t lose fish randomly. I have the Naso, yellow tang, pyramid butterfly, and all the 15 anthias all thriving. Not one fish loss. No ich. No flukes. Nothing.

The Achilles had some white stuff on its mouth, but Jay Hemdal and Mike both said it was nothing to worry about.

I’m typing this one handed, with the other one holding the Achilles tang. What the heck? The white chin only appeared post mortem. He did not have that yesterday or ever.

This video shows the white flaking stuff around its mouth, but even that went away after a few days:

That really sucks. Deepest condolences and sympathies, that was an awesome fish.

I think it’s safe to say you’re the best vendor I’ve ever dealt with. 10/10

Thank you, Mike. It really means a lot. The Achilles was the coolest fish I’ve ever had.

Sorry for no lights, I was in the warehouse just doing some inventory. Lights were already off. But I think you can see the fish easily.

I reserved this one for you.
Its eating good and healty.

Is the white chin normal? Just curious. Mine didn’t seem to have it. I think the black chin looks nicer.

In other news, the yellow tang is looking great. He took a liking to the nori clip.

I think you should consider feeding nori to your tangs because that’s all the Naso, yellow, and the Achilles (rip) choose/chose to eat. I understand if it pollutes the tank. Just an observation.

You can see the yellow tang and newly transitioned male anthias here.

Some achilles have white chin some dont. I am not 100% sure what causes it. I have seen white blotchy spits every now and then but those are stress spots that normally go away after it's not stressed.

Regarding the nori in our tank. We dont put any algae in our tanks because all tanks have 1 drain and algae clogs the drain strainer and overflows the tanks which in turn causes the ato to kick in and causes the salinity to drop drastically.
So to avoid all that and honestly most our fish are already sold before we get them or are sold while in our facility. So it's just a 14 to 30 days on not having no nori.
We substitute nori by feeding brine with spirulina.

Ah. That’s a good alternative. No need for nori then.

Would it be too much trouble to ask for a black chin one? I am not very fond of the white variant. I hope it’s not too much trouble.

The previous Achilles had a fine appetite. I don’t think the food was the issue. It’s fine if they aren’t eating meaty foods, since that’s not going to be their staple, anyway.

Yah no problem I can replace it with a fully black achilles

So I found out that the white chin is due to stress and it fades away as fish settles in. Looking at the other pics and vioe yours did have a white chin in some videos but less visibile and as it got to you it got comfortable in your tank and color pigment went away.

In this unboxing video of your fish you can see it had a fainted white chin
I totally get it. It makes sense they can change their colors.

It would make me feel better knowing the Achilles at least has the potential to become all black. If I know it changed, I’d be at peace knowing it can change back.

I never want to be difficult. You are doing me a favor here. You can send whatever fish you think is best. It’s your call. 🙂

lol no worries. I will send you one that is healthy and black in color. I will take care of you.
