Hi. Im looking at a used

Red Sea Max Nano 20G Reef . This is the NOT the G2..Is it worth the risk? Seems like a decent deal, of course says no leaks. Ive read about the issues with the glass leaking.

Thanks,
James

Leaking glass is like a rusted car, slap on some new silicone and bam all done! Unless there are cracks you're gtg. Silicone is easy.
Worth the risk is something you have to answer for yourself. The real question is with a nano tank (<50g) do i have the time? Do I want to work on it, do I want to dream about it, why are my phosphates 25 and my nitrates .08ppm? Everybody says they'd help, but it's just me at 2 am doing a waterchange....

The smaller ones have a better track record because there's less pressure on the seams. I'd take a close look at the silicone. Some of the leaks I've seen are from people hitting the corners with a scraper and causing the seal to separate and eventually break. Silicone can be repaired but if there are any breaks in the actual glass, put on your track shoes and run.

A brand new one is $729. How big of a discount are you looking at?

It's not a terrible deal if it's in great condition. With the matching stand it'll run you $1,000.

He's throwing in some extras with the ATO, powerhead, heater, UV sterilizer, and lid. It's kind of a funny set-up, he has a $60 powerhead but a top-of-the-line ATO. It's also weird that he upgraded the return pump--Red Sea gives you a decent one. He's giving you the original one so that's nice. It's nice that it's free but the thing that doesn't really work, and isn't necessary on a nano, is the Red Sea skimmer. I'm also not sure if a UV sterilizer that size would actually do anything but I'm not an expert with those. IMO, the "necessary" extras would cost you another $200-300 new. He didn't mention an ATO reservoir so you'd need one of those as well. A nice 18L ReefCan is $70.

If I had to guess he lost a battle with dinos and gave up. If not, he caught the bug and upgraded to a larger tank.

Haha

This is not a wallet-friendly hobby.

Innovative Marine makes some cool nano tanks for a lot less. Red Sea charges high-end prices.
