Calling all DIY people! Need to pick your brain!

So I am getting a new tank and with it come my Redsea 160 lights with stand. Problem is that I can only have the tank 2cm out from the back of the tank.. problem is that the stand screw part pops out quite a bit.. photo is of a friends thank who has the same lights.. is there something that can be done? (Apart from drilling a wide hole in my wall??)

Cut the threads on the screw

I'm not sure if this would work but you could reverse the holder as in have the screw on the inside of the aquarium instead of out.

Just checked with my friend and the mount pops out 3 cm and I only have 2cm clearence

If you can't slide your tank stand a couple of cm forward to make that space your best bet is to hang the lights from the ceiling or wall. I wouldn't go putting holes in the walls to cram those mounts in. If you inadvertently expose any wiring behind the wall you could create a catastrophy.

As has been said, shorter screws is the only answer here.

Otherwise you will need a new mount system, whether it be a RMS style bar, wall, or ceiling mount (hang).

For me.. you really want acces to to the back of the tank,,, my wife hates it but I have my current tank where I can fit my fist in the back. There will be a time when you need to get back there.

Here is what I had made and still using. Get a portable coat rack with wheels, you will need to modify it. Remove the bottom pipe, it is not needed. The top pole I had to get a wooded dowel about an inch in diameter and you can make it as long as needed for the width of the tank. Mine is adjustable for any height needed.

Once everything is secured you can hang your lights and run the wiring secured to the dowel. You can decorate with plastic plant vines. Also I can roll out the hanger on one side to make room for tank maintenance. My wife is happy I do not have to make holes in the ceiling or wall, and it looks pretty good.

Take the Screw to an ACE Hardware, go to their assortment Drawers, and Match it to a shorter screw, most likely the Screw is Metric. If they don’t have anything, find out what the Thread Size and Pitch is by Threading a Nut on the Screw. Write this down. Order the Screw through Mac-Master Carr.

agreed, a shorter screw can be found, but the overhang at the top is still going to be an issue.

So regardless of the screws length this mount wont fit?

If that is the case there are a few things you could do. Easiest option is probably to scoot the tank forward the few centimeters you need. Otherwise you could build a new DIY light mount. . . or drill a hole in the wall and bolt the mount to that (but wall looks like cinder block. . . so probably quite the task). . . sure there are other options. . . .

If the screw is the only issue you could make a spacer to fit between the mount and the tank and friction fit the mount. . . then you wouldn't need the screw at all. Could make a spacer out of firm foam with a little give and make it a bit oversized, or maybe corrugated plastic.

Can you just drill & tap a new screw hole on the side of the bracket?

What does this screw do? Do you need it to adjust the height of the lights or is there simply to attach the whole contraption to the tank?

Did I read correctly, that now, the screw isn't the issue but the entire bracket won't fit?
