Hi, I just got a clam for my reef tank and I believe it’s a maxima. Could you please confirm if it is a maxima clam and let me know the key things I should focus on for proper care (lighting, flow, placement, and feeding)? Thanks!

We will need a better picture of just the shell for proper ID.

White light and the shell shape and scutes would be preferred
Here are some better pictures

I'm not an expert on identifying these, but I associate Maximas with more pronounced scutes than that. Mine certainly has bigger scutes.

I'm wondering if that is a crocea, but consider this just a bump until one of the clam gurus shows up.

Agreed on the scutes.

It COULD be a maxima in bad condition as I see little growth and the scutes could have been eroded over time.

Either way the clam doesn’t look healthy

Im thinking maybe crocea also but I too am not a clam guru. It definitely looks more like my crocea than maxima. These are all smaller clams 2ish inches. First two are crocea and the last a maxima

What should I do about it’s health? Do you think it will die?

Are all these on the rocks? My main question here is where should I place it. Rocks or sand?

Crocea and Maxima I keep on the rocks under 400+ par. I've only had this tank running 5-6 months so clams are not very old but I'm seeing signs of growth.

I think all you can do is put it up high on your rockwork in a stable place and give it as much light as possible. My maxima is under nearly 400par as measured with a seneye. General wisdom is that is the lower end of the norm for Crocea and Maxima. More won't hurt it if you can manage higher levels.

Generally, Maxima and Crocea are placed on the rockwork. Some other clams prefer to be on the sand, but not the one you have.

Ok so I was checking to see how he was doing and the clam has already attached to the rock. I’m assuming that is a good sign

It's a good sign from a health perspective. Is the lighting in its current position bright enough? If not, having it attach is a bit unfortunate because it will stress the clam to move it to a brighter spot.

I think it is in the brightest spot in the tank. The light is directly above it. It must be happy with its spot if it attached already
