OK Im not sure if this is the place to put this but.
I was in the hobby for yrs and had a business setting up and servicing lrg systems 300 to 600 gallons the economy of 07,08 had many folks stop $ for service and even tore down many tanks even the large ones
My tanks were beautiful and had so much coral growth we were cutting all the time, now my question since im setting back up a 180 is all the new equipment I have been researching for quite a while I get the lighting led vs MH and vhos less to $ run and better options to adjust and not needing to replace bulbs often
But everyone seems to run dosing equipment for everything these days even controller's on a skimmer pump
This was a typical set up I used a hundred times large sump ,float valve to top off direct plum to drain venturi or down draft skimmers external pumps
large water change weekly adding calcium and some other additives as needed but not many due to water changes
my question is if it aint broke dont fix it or am I to old school
Thanks folks for any imput

There are still a lot of people on here who do it the old-school way. You don't have to have dosers or controller boards to have a successful reef tank. Dosers and controllers are nice to have as they simplify certain aspects of reefing (dosing, being able to monitor your tank away from home, having stuff setup to come on and off during a certain time, etc..).

I do it old school. I manually dose Ca & alk every morning. I test the water once a week. No computer hookup. Only my lights run on a software schedule. The high tech stuff may be great, but it can also fail.

I also still do it old school. If it's not broke, don't fix it: because if you do add a lot of new stuff it will eventually break. I figure the less moving parts the less to break.

As far as the tech stuff I was thinking the same just 1 more thing to go wrong or stop working now I am going with kessil lighting and will probably try to figure out how to adjust them a bit but still think im going to stay old school due to having such success over the yrs
I had colt and green singularia corals 18 inches high a foot or more across that needed trimmed every month torches with 60 plus heads
I always believed the things they needed were in the salt and keeping good water quality so in 265 we would do a 20 gallon change every week that being said my set ups were so simple to service the real big tanks would get about the same ratio 1 tank was 75 gallons a week but it was a 720 gallon tank
Hit a switch the tank pump shuts off the sump fills hit a switch a pump in the sump drains it to a level marked on the sump hit a switch another pump in another room refills the sump turn tank pump back on check levels and head to another tank
