That doesn't look red to me, more pink. As long as he's eating and acting normally then I wouldn't worry too much. Keep an eye on that pink area to be sure it doesn't get worse. Hopefully your already feeding with vitamin supplements.... right?

Hey melypr, have you ever dealt with flukes?

Little guy hasn't been eating the last couple days, and his gills are almost always red/pink. I did a little research on common ailments and flukes seemed to fit, it even explains why his fins were torn up, I thought he was just being bullied by tankmates at the fish store. So I did a freshwater dip this evening. He seemed to handle it well, and after there is debris and some white objects left behind in the water. Can you, or someone else, ID?

Sorry, best pics I could get.

Also, after going back in the QT, he picked his head up off of the bottom of the tank and his back fin is extended, his usual posture lately has been chin to glass, and idk if I've ever seen that fin yet.

Yes I deal with flukes almost every week at the store. I treat all our new fish with Prazipro as a matter of course. We used to do weekly freshwater dips on all our tangs before I got permission to use Prazi in the Fish Only system. Now, it's hard to tell without something to show size, but that all looks like plain old debris like sand particles. I'll show you a good picture of what a tang looked like after his FW dip. He had flukes for sure. Now there are many different types of flukes and they are different sizes but this gives you a good idea of what to look for. Also, these flukes were floating up and down by the bubbler in the water so some are closer to the camera than others.

Oh, I didn't realize you had a store! There was nothing that looked like that left behind, so maybe I was wrong about the flukes. Maybe I'll treat prazipro anyway, seems a lot of people do preventatively.

Thank you very much for the reply! Helpful as always.

I dont own the store I just work there. ;) I dont see any problem with treating with Prazi prophylacticaly. I do this all the time (every monday) and have seen much healthier fish come out of our fish only tanks.

I can say I've had one for about a year. Good fish, they'll eat whatever that find floating in the water column. As far as turning different colors, that seems very strange and would worry me for sure.

Little guy has just over a week before DT time, but today he started acting differently. Hopefully someone could shed some light on their behavior for me. I'm hoping he's just used to the tank and more confident now.

Checking on him this morning he was halfway up the tank hovering, first I've ever seen that. He's also not skittish and hiding from me like usual. All out in the open. Did a water change on my display tank this morning, so I did a 25% on the QT tank too. This seemed to make him act more erratic. His mouth is slightly open, not sure if it usually is or not, he swimming from top to bottom and all around, then he'll settle on the bottom and swim in place for a few, then back up and around.

Parameters are:
NH3: 0
NO2: 0
NO3: <1ppm
Salinity: 34ppt

There's a job filter and a sponge filter driven by an air pump in the tank, so there should be plenty of oxygen. There was probably ~1° temp swing during the water change.

Is it normal? Do I need to do something?

Does he only do this when you approach or is this constantly?

I would say something is stressing him out. Mine will only leave the bottom at feeding time to grab food. Constant up and down is a bad sign on these guys.

Not good. Idk what I could do. I shut all the lights out and left the area. Hopefully he calms down.

I have a video of him after the water change, before I started worrying that something was wrong. Idk how to upload it from my phone though.

He has been in qt by himself? I see a bit of fraying on the fins but his color is good. It is possible just the lack of a burrow is what is causing the roaming behavior.

He is by himself. In the fish store he was with 2 clowns in a very small tank, maybe under a gallon. It was on of the setups where they have a wall full of small containers all piped together. His color was dull and fins were much worse than when I brought him home, so he does look very healthy in that sense.

He still has his tube in there right? I saw you recently did a dip as well. So I would just let him rest. As long as there is a lid so he doesn't jump in would not panic attacks this point.

He is probably a bit stressed. They are known jumpers, so his hovering might be looking for an escape route. See if you can observe him from far enough away not to be noticed. I have a post on here from a month ago where I was *sure* my new clown was dying. It turned out that he just panicked when I approached the tank. Now he is much calmer :)

His color is good and he seems calm, I wouldn't worry. If his behavior were more skittish and erratic I would be more concerned, but this seems as though he is getting more comfortable with things.
