Hello, I'm new to the saltwater aquarium hobby and I'm trying to set up my first tank. I want to make sure I'm making the right decisions. Currently, I'm considering two options: the Fluval 32-Gallon Marine Tank or waiting to purchase the Red Sea G2 XL. My goal is to build an affordable setup, but I'm also willing to spend a little more upfront if it means getting higher-quality, upgradeable equipment that will support my growth in the hobby. I haven't found any comprehensive guides or videos that give me enough confidence to move forward with a decision. I'm wondering if I'm on the right track and would appreciate any suggestions on the best way to start.

In addition to the tank setup, a list of must-have equipment would be really helpful. I understand the basics of cycling a tank and the initial stages of setting up, but I get a bit confused about maintenance in the long run. Specifically, I'm concerned about maintaining the right salinity and mineral levels as the tank matures. I’d also like to know what testing equipment and supplies are necessary for emergencies.

Unfortunately, my local reef store closed this summer, and now my only options are PetSmart and Petco. I do understand RO/DI water, but I haven’t yet looked into systems for making it at home. If you can direct me to any useful threads that might answer these questions, that would be great!

Also, I’m wondering what kind of tank and setup would be best for a beginner, especially if my goal is to eventually get into soft corals and clownfish.

Welcome!

Higher quality- dont know much about Fluval tanks and Red sea has had some issues with seals parting (some have no problem at all with them). Glasscages is really good but more money. The Innovative marine tanks look solid but never had one. I have a Nyos and I like it so far. 69g.

For maintaining salinity, you want to get yourself an ATO and ATO resevoir. Tunze makes a really good one. This keeps salinity stable and has a fail safe in case the sensor is being fresh.

Just read your butt off on "good tanks" here and come to your own decision. You'll be ok once you do that.

Welcome!

Search for redsea failures and proceed with caution.... or really, imho, run away from that tank brand. FWIW, I'm happy with their reefmat, skimmer, and lights.

Welcome to R2R and the salty world. Take things slowly. Lots of knowledgeable and helpful people here who will support and advise you when needed.
Perhaps avoid RedSea tanks if second hand. Some people have had bad experiences.
