Found this fish in my LFS today. It was pure white in the store. They gave it to me for 50 bucks because they didnt want to deal with it.

On top of that the tank water was nasty, lots of crap in it…. As you can see in the bucket I transferred it to before acclimating to my tank water.

But I couldnt say no to this fish that was in need.

Am I correct in assuming the top fin is just gone and wont grow back?

Any help is appreciated!

That’s how yellow tangs show HlLE. The top fin most likely won’t grow back.

I can’t see the red spit very well, but it does look like an injury…..

So the fin disintegrating like that is HLLE??

dang, it sucks to see this fish be neglected my your LFS. I love yellow tangs
Yeah wasnt the LFS, he came in 4 days ago. They were just as appalled as I was with his condition.

Get sad when tangs abused! Actually any animal! Do your best to take care of creatures in your care. If you can’t don’t get into owning animals!!
Yeah the people who surrendered him said he wasnt pretty and wanted a new yellow tang that was pretty.

My LFS has a tang in similar condition that they rescued and just keep in their show tank. Swims ok even if it's a bit funny looking

Did it get the color back??

They can regain color but as stated, this is now the fin structure. Ive seen many of these tangs like this and they live a normal life

Definitely will be a unique new friend, glass he found a caring home!

I hope they don’t have kids!! And I don’t mean that in an evil way. Can you imagine little kids running around with the same mentality? It’s what is wrong with the world these. Sadly they will always exist! Regarding creatures as if they don’t belong, unless as in this case they look pretty and full fill their selfish needs, whatever they may be!

Glad my late pops taught me the ways to care for animals!

Yes - Zebrasoma tangs show it differently. Those smooth scalloped edges are the key diagnostic.

@littlefoxx I was going to say the same thing. (About HLLE) - and it may heal. Make sure water conditions are excellent with good feeding. As to any other injury - which I can't see, if there is red streaking that can be a sign of bacterial infection - which may warrant treatment with an antibiotic.
