Many people like the idea of having a frag tank or separate area where they can grow out frags but lack the space to be able to set up a frag tank. Good news is that if you have some space in your sump or under you then you have space for frags! Even if it's a small space to host frags it's better than having to have a frag rack inside your display tank. So let's talk about it today!

1. How many of you have or have had a frag area inside your sump?

2. What should people consider when deciding whether or not to add a frag section to the sump?

Just thinking about that....

Before i always have some small tank and kept frags in it, but, now i have one sump chamber, not too big, but enough for lot of frags.

My only concer is flow, probably i will need to add some mini wavemaker or low flow pump, and lights....

Before i use plain 10w 25000k white led, and corals grow was ok... But now im thinking maybe 10w royal blue is better choice?

I have kept frag in the sump but I have also kept a 10g in the sump area that worked great.

I've been thinking about this more and more in the last few months. It's definitely something I want to do when I upgrade to a bigger system. My only concern is keeping the light from spilling outside the frag area and getting algae growing where I don't want it.

So just upgraded 1 of my g4 radions to a Radion g5, and will be doing the same to the other (already upgraded 1 of the 3 earlier when my soccer player kicked a ball into one a dunked it). I suppose I could only sell 1 and use the other in the sump as a frag tank light. Sump is kind of full already, but better than looking at a frag rack in the main.

Nope. Frags in my sump would mean reef quality lighting in my sump. No thanks.

I used to use a macro reactor, specifically to keep light in the sump to a minimum. Macro reactor broke, so I'm now using a zetlight over one compartment of the sump for chaetomorpha. Luckily, the sump dividers are opaque. Still keeps nearly all of the light in one section.

I’ve had a frag area in my sump since 2008. Have ran halide , T5 , and LED. They all work. I’m running a hydra 26 now.

Extra flow helps, I use a MP10.

Where's my "no possible way I could fit a frag area in my sump" option?

But seriously, I would love to, if only I had the space.

We recently had some zoa frags get out of hand and grow into each other, so into the sump they go until we have time to frag them! It's definitely a nice option for temporary storage. Note the light zip tied to a 2x4 haha

The day I am able to say “my zoas are growing out of control”, is the day I will be truly happy. ;Hilarious
