One way to lower nitrite.

Randy it's normal that this tank has 0.1 - 0.2 No2?


I haven’t seen enough data to know what typical reef tank levels are. I have no reason to think that level is unusual.

Here in Italy all are scared about No2 levels.. Many reef2reef found No2 value over 0.05..

Someone here speak about 0.005 like max max level tolerated from sensibile Acroporas

Do you know or have some article or study about this?

Not a study on acropora, but I have no reason to think they have an issue. IMO, the fear of nitrite comes from freshwater experiences, where it is far more toxic than marine systems. It takes hundreds of ppm of nitrite to kill any of the marine fish shown here, and inverts seem fairly similar, taking many ppm. Is acropora different? possibly, but I would not bet that nitrite is ever a concern in any operating reef tank.

Just my observation, here are my NO2/ NO3 values:

My NO2 is 0.15-0.02 based on the ICP lab results.

Some Acroporas are hard to keep, anything can make them upset…

With Nyos I've 1 ppm No3.. With Tropic 0.1-0.2 No2 and 15 No3.. But in the Tropic Marine Tangle 15 No3 with 0.1 or 0.2 Nitrite, means 1 No3
Each test will likely respond differently to the presence of nitrite.

I’d be wary of assuming that a sample with 0.1 ppm nitrite in it when taken will still have 0.1 ppm nitrite a week later when tested.

Interesting comment, so would you assume it was higher or lower when the sample was taken?

Either way I don’t believe I need to do anything, corals look happy…
After looking at the trend it seems that prior to mid 2023 the NO2 was zero, since 2023 the ICP lab reports some NO2…

Not sure. Various processes can impact it. I don’t know that it changes, but I just wouldn’t put too much emphasis on a value without knowing if it can change in transit.
