Well it wouldn’t be right to not show the uglies lol. He just put a filter sock in, stirred the sand, and blasted the rocks. Super proud of that, as he has been researching how to speed the diatoms up. He said “It is simple. Stir the sand and get the slilicates to where they can eat them. When they eat them all, the mostly die.”

Now for the nasty tank pic. Well just cloudy water and a little bit of diatoms on the sand, as it is all mostly clean again.

I'm looking forward to seeing the pics. I hope to set up my sump/refurg this weekend. Mine is cycling now
As promised, here are some plumbing and sump pics. Ignore the mess, as we still have to change some things up, route the return over the back, and install wire managers. But as it is, it actually works well. It also gets things going for him. He will be doing all of the work for the changes as well. Best way to learn is to do it.

Siphon Break is 2 small holes Drilled in the bottom of the “T”. I put a little filter sponge underneath it to reduce noise and the tiny splash it had.

Drain and return that is soon to be 2 drains.

Fuge section and the makeshift tumbler until the plumbing is finalized. Pump is way oversized, so 50% supplies the DT and the fuge wonderfully.

Manifold valve and return shutoff. These will be reused when routes over the back.

And a simple but effective carbon reactor. GE whole home filter canister, DI resin cartridge inside with fine foam removed, course foam in its place, and then carbon. There is a small valve to regulate flow, but it will be changed out to a gate valve when the return plumbing is redone.
