Well, wish I would have seen that before. Dip is done with RO, but no airstone.
You're fine doing that. The last FWD I did I spaced out and used 0 TDS RODI with no issues. The next day the derasa in question had normal mantle extension.

I routinely have to take mine out and scrape the aiptasia away from their shells, perhaps you have something near the edge that's irritating the mantle?

Ok. It has been my experience that a long FWD will more often than not cure many ailments that clams get. If it is just a section of mantle that has receded there's a good chance it will recover 100%.

PMD is very much still a thing these days, in fact, there are other pathogens that have been seen in recent years as well. It only takes one clam to be infected, then spread to others near by, which can happen along the way from the culture facility, wild collection, wholesaler, retailer, etc.. If clams from various places are put together for any length of time, the chances of PMD existing and spreading rises.
Any recent documented cases and pics of resolution with fwd? Not just declining ones? I have been pretty active with clams and forums over the past couple decades but not on an importer level. Last I knew the big places like Dr Mac hadn’t seen pmd in ages after becoming vigilant about dipping and being that wild clams are quite a bit more uncommon that captive raised which generally practices better bio security I have not seen it in a long time.

Now other pathogens yes, and I have lost my system to them but didn’t have the old school pmd symptoms

Being from petco it’s almost certainly CB.

CB = Captive Bred

Pinched mantle disease is caused by a protazoan, and if I'm not mistaken can live without a host so it's definitely still a thing in hobbyists tanks. OrionN is the guy to discuss it with, he pioneered the FWD for clams.

Documentation? No, that would require someone sending the infected clam into a lab. Over the past few years I've helped several local stores deal with PMD where they had mixed cultured clams with wild caught and some that were only cultured clams. Observing the symptoms and advising to FW dip did the trick. Can anyone confirm PMD, agian, not without sending in the infected clam. In recent years there was a known vendor who brought in cultured clams that were infected with Perkinsus, so cultured clams aren't free of pathogens because they are cultured.

For those curious about PMD, please look at @OrionN stickie in this section that talks about dealing with and treating PMD. It very much still exists in the hobby to this day. What makes this more complicated, as I mentioned earlier, is the fact that there are more unknown pathogens/issues that have affected clams recently. So it is vital that we share information relating to these issues and any treatments that have been attempted to treat them.

I was just curious since many things simply get parroted on the internet over and over without much experience, but you seem to have it. I see many threads where people just go right to FW dips and it seems to only stress and kill the animal faster, heck I did it too. It makes us feel better as animal stewards to *do* something but my concern is if that is the appropriate action.

The elegance FW dip did wonders though and was the only time I could keep an elegance coral so there does seem to plenty of evidence FW work for multiple reef creatures, I just worry about doing more harm than good, but realistically those clams that don't make it after a dip probably wouldn't make it anyway.

That is why I wanted to call out the PMD items, as I still feel it is over diagnosed and shine more info on the item. I do say to any clam keeper to QT until new shell growth, I lost 72 clams on my last system because I got a single infected DD blue squammy years ago. Wiped them all out.

The CB wasn't about all pathogens, but only specific to PM since most importers and growers really took drastic measures at that time. I am sure Dr Mac and others have plenty of posts on the history if people want to review.

I won't derail the thread anymore and appreciate OP's indulgence and would be absolutely thrilled if in 1 month we check back and the FW dip saved it. I a skeptical it will, as it would if it was PM, but I hope so!

I agree that some go straight to FW dips and that could cause more harm than good, but healthy clams should take it. Also, FW only works for PMD and not other pathogens. I had a green squamosa that was suffering from an unknown pathogen (at least that’s my theory) and I treated with OA, which seemed to improve the symptoms, but that only lasted for so long. The clam survived for a while, with minimal growth, but ultimately died.
But I completely agree that clams need to be QT’d, especially if other clams are present.

Clam is looking much better after the dip. No more weird crinkles or folds in the mantle! Wish I would have tried that with the nice derasa I lost awhile back.

That's great news! Glad to hear it's back to normal. Now you can help spread the info when you read about someone's clam with a pinched mantle, they're almost always treatable if caught in time.
