I noticed after a quick google images search that there seems to be considerable variation in the color of the pink streaked wrasse. I've never seen one in person but I'm considering asking my LFS to bring one in for me.

Any idea what's up? is it sexual dimorphism?

Which of these two photos is more accurate? (Or can someone post one that is a typical individual?)

Ah in the liveaquaria posting they say they are sexually dichromatic. Males have brighter yellow and they have blue markings on their operculum.

Actually, Pinstripe wrasse aren’t sexually dimorphic so it would be very hard to say what gender one is, there’s a mix of the colour variants aswell, they don’t all look like one shade of brown/red like say Halichoeres males/females or Cirrhilabrus males/females. I would actually say mine is more accurate to the top photo with a bit less red and more electric blue on the pelvic fins and anal fin. Very curious fish for sure (Although, possum wrasse are my favourite of the nano wrasse simply because they were my first nano wrasse genus to own). This photo isn’t mine but looks very close to mine.

Haha love those all seeing eyes! Thanks for sharing to your pics. Very cool fish.
For sure! They’re also very close in personality to the more known Macropharyngodon bipartitus (Blue Star Leopard Wrasse)
I am also able to compare them to eachother because I have owned my small ~1” juvenile BSLW for 2 months now and she has been in the tank with the pink streak, my favourite wrasse is for sure between those two!

Hey, what other fish do you have with your pink streaked wrasse in you 20 gallon?
I have about 5 others but two will eventually outgrow it (The other wrasses):
- Black Clown Goby (Gobiiodon astrangulatus)
- Yasha Goby (Stonogobiops yasha)
- Linear Blenny (Escenius lineatus)
- Blue Star Leopard Wrasse (Macropharyngodon bipartitus)
- Naoko Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus naokoae)

I was able to find a pink streaked about a month ago after many months searching.

It is a fascinating little fish, both stunning and subtle. I have been amazed at the consistent appetite, and the willingness it has to eat pieces of food (e.g. chunks of mysis) that are considerably larger than you’d expect for such a small fish.

Interestingly, the pink streaked appears to enjoy all types of food I’ve offered, including mysis, reef frenzy, real oceanic eggs, and others (although I haven’t seen him eat pellets, but I think they do not sink down to his level in the tank while staying suspended). This is quite the difference from my yellow banded possum. I’ve never seen my possum eat anything I’ve put into the tank. He simply nibbles on the rocks all day.

Anyone considering a pink streaked, I’d highly recommend it. Tons of character, and mine is surprisingly bold and full of character.

Here is a few pictures. He is maybe an inch at most, and he is not afraid of the other fish in the tank, and even hangs out with the clownfish on the trachy they’ve decided to host.

Ive found it really difficult to capture the true colors of the fish on camera. Here is another picture that better shows off some of the orange coloration

I agree with this, under blue lights getting the ultimate colours of this fish is almost impossible, under whites it’s not much better since they hide in the rocks most of the time when near the tank
