Placement of tempature sensor

When using a temperature controller such as an inkbird or ranco where would the best placement be for the temperature sensor? Is it better inside the DT or down in the sump.

I put my temp sensor upstream of the heater in the sump.

Same, higher flow area not affected when your heater is running.

I attached mine with Velcro straps to my drain pipe where it enters the sump.
