I’m a little late posting but I thought I’d share as I started this tank very differently than other tanks I’ve started.

April 10 2018 I added water to a tank with mix of Caribsea life rock, Reel Reef Rock and dry sand. This was my first time not using live rock.

This tank sat without lights and just a circulating return pump for a couple weeks.

April 25 I added fish. I’ve never cycled my tank with fish but it’s been done before so I was game for a different way of doing things. I also added a temporary hydra LED to get some algae growing as I also put a ton of hermits and snails in the tank with the fish. I added a large cleanup with a variety of snail types because I’ve dealt with algae in the past and my theory was algae is going to grow so keep in manageable from the beginning.

Cycling the tank with fish was pretty stressful. Testing water multiple times a day and watching how the fish were behaving. I dosed Sechem prime and stability religiously per instructions on the bottle. I bought all my fish at once and had plenty of water available to do massive water changes and plans to remove invertebrates etc if the tank needed to be treated for disease. I’ve dealt with ick in the past and did not want it in this tank. My theory for buying all the fish at once was to be able to treat if needed before adding coral. Thankfully I have not had to deal with fish disease in my tank.

By May 16th the tank was fully cycled.

May 25th I added a few corals to the tank to see how they’d do. I added a few chalice frags and some zoas which I still have today. Sorry I don’t have any pics when they were first added.

The first of July we took our yearly trip to Utah to visit family and I brought back a load of frags from my brother in-law.

July 16 I traded out my single hydra for a set of radion gen 4s and added two MP40s. Shortly after I started added some SPS.

In the beginning I was planning on a low nutrient system but soon learned about the benefits of phosphates and nitrates in a reef tank. I started feeding more frequently via auto feeder to get my nutrient levels up. I’m currently feeding pellets via auto feeder 5 times a day and frozen at night. I also feed benepets a couple times a week. That has kept phosphate at .01-.02 and nitrates at 10.

I’ve been really pleased with how my tank is doing. Things have been growing like crazy and coloring up nicely.

My tank is now 7 months old. Here’s how things look today

Thanks James.

Livestock include:

Powder brown
3 Christmas anthias
Blue tang
Yellow tank
McCoskeri flasher wrasse
Pintail fairy wrasse

Blood red shrimp
Cleaner shrimp

100+ blue leg hermits
50ish Astrea snails
25ish bumble bee snails
20ish nerite snails
10 ninja star snails
70is cerith snails
10ish nassarius snails

And a lot of frags of a variety of zoas sps and chalices. I’ll have to get a list of what corals I have.

In the beginning I also had two onyx clownfish but my son started a 10 gal tank so I donated them to his tank. It been extremely rewarding having him gain interest in the hobby.

I also started with a Naso tang but he just wouldn’t eat for me. He’d nibble a little nori but that just wasn’t enough to keep him a live. It was devastating to watch.

I got a good deal on an octopus S-130 at reefapolusa when I first set up my tank so I purchased it with plans to replace with a bigger skimmer later but it has been perfect even with my heavy feeding schedule. It is by far the best skimmer I’ve ever owed.

One of my favorite additions to the tank was my skimmate collector. I love that i don’t have to worry about my skimmer for long periods of time and helps keep smell down. My wife has complained about how my tank smells in the past but hasn’t said a thing with this tank.

Thanks everyone!

I was having some pretty hefty swings in pH depending on if we were home or not. I wasn’t going to worry about it but One day it went from 8.3 to 7.9 very quickly after we arrived home from a week away and two SPS got some minor burnt tips. I decided to run my skimmer intake into the garage and added a refugium. My ph now runs 8.0-8.2 and doesn’t drop dramatically when we are home. I went with a kessil h380 hallo II for the refugium light and so far I’m happy with it.

You can see after a few days with the change my pH rose significantly. I attribute it mostly to the skimmer air intake being in the garage but I’m also happy with other possible benefits of the refugium.

My tank is still doing well. The refugium has continued to keep my pH in the 8-8.2 range. I’ve seen a bit of an increase in growth expecially in coraline algae. Here are some updated pics

I’m super excited my WD is coloring up.

Hi....was reading this thread....so did you have any fish loss during the cycle process? Your tank looks great by the way!

The reason I ask is I just bought the Red Sea Reefer 750 XXL and it will replace my current set up, and I am a nervous wreck about moving my livestock to the new tank. The new tank will be in the same room, but a different area.

Thanks Cancun. I didn’t lose any during the cycle. My rock was dry man made rock though so I wasn’t dealing with die off. Your fish should make the transition easy. If you have any large SPS colonies that is what I here people lose during transition. A lot of people move tanks without issue. I would suggest getting an ammonia alert badge, it worked really well for me. I’d also dose stability and have prime on hand if needed while your biofilter stabilizes.

I have same one sitting in my floor wait for the stand

It’s nice because I have easy access to the tank and sand bed. My last tank was a 150 with the same footprint and it was a pain getting to the bottom
