a friend gave this to me a while back but have not been able to figure out its name is.

Hmmm, the color appears off but the growth patten and polyps look like Hydnophora. Can you disturb the polyps, and get a photo with the polyps retracted? Hydnophora has a very distinct skeletal structure, which would be easily recognizable.
 
agree it looks like a hydno which by the way is considered an SPS by most but who cares...maybe we need a MPS designation :) ...they're cool corals so long as you keep them away from others so as to not sting.
