Please Teach Me About Ozone.

I'm in the works of setting up a 125g mixed reef.

I know nothing,....about ozone so please teach me.

How much time or husbandry does it require ?

Please add photo's, links and video's.

Pro's & Con's.
Expense.
Set-up

Which company's are the best.
Is it better than UV ? Please explain the differences.

And the big question, is it worth it ?

Ozone can be awesome but it is not cheap or easy to implement IME. Even if you hook it to a skimmer, you have to make sure every piece is rated for ozone usage.

No doubt it makes the water crystal clear. Like the fish are floating. But they require caution and maintenance to run

Ozone is easy to run and requires little maintenance provided you have the right equipment setup. I run the Poseidon 200 on the second to lowest setting for one hour every night from 2:15am - 3:15am. The Poseidon is connected to a skimmer rated for ozone. This keeps the water crystal clear. I don’t use an air dryer. When I did maintenance on the unit at the one year mark there was no buildup or residue in the generator chamber. I assume this is because I don’t live in a humid environment and my house has very high ceilings with central A/C.

I also have a Milwaukee controller setup which monitors ORP levels.

Ozone is clarifying and de-yellowing your water. I have an Avast Marine Ozone system and I am a big fan, but it's not cheap or easy to dial-in.

I will say it does make your water look a lot more clear, but I find it particularly valuable in a larger tank when you have long viewing distances. For a 125g you will still enjoy the clarity, but I personally don't think the value is there unless you are just wanting to go all out.


A UV Sterilizer is frying parasites, diseases, algae, and bacteria (like Cyano & Dinos) from the water column. I consider this one a lot more essential and worthy of planning around. This one is a set and forget for the most part (other than changing bulbs).
