i recently seen a small porcupine puffer at my pet store (about 3-4 inches). I was wondering if I can keep one in a 75 gallon for around like 2 years, then rehome it once it gets too big. I know people will say that I should get either a smaller species or that I need a 180 gallon tank, but I really want to get this one even if it’s just for a while. I will even do small daily water changes if that is necessary.

If your fish store can't find someone with a 180 to put the fish in, how do you think you'll fare when it comes time to rehome? I would say enjoy the fish at the store while it's there.

You can keep a porcupine puffer in a 75 gallon tank for a while, but a two-year timeline isn’t realistic if you’re aiming to keep the fish properly.

I've read that a 3–4 inch puffer can reach 6–8 inches within a year, and at that size a 75 gallon is already too cramped for normal movement and behavior.

Water changes and strong maintenance will help with water quality, but they don’t solve the core issue of limited space. Even in clean water, the fish can become stressed if it doesn’t have enough room to move naturally.

The biggest risk is re-homing. Once the fish is larger, it becomes much harder to place.

If it were my decision to make, I wouldn't do it.
