LOL, I know exactly what you mean...Well, can't wait to see your nano project.
Hydor 180 is okay for a small tank like this and I like the fact you can adjust the flow rate. One thing everyone complains about is the base that holds the unit, it is so loose, a complete design flaw imo. So far did not have any issues with noise, try using a zip tie to see if it helps.

Just got the Hydor rotating wave deflector to add to the pico 180 and it's actually pretty nice, really adds a nice flow. Thanks for the zip tie suggestion, it has helped quiet the rio 50 down. And I agree the base that holds the Hydor is a piece of junk. But I really need to stay off amazon prime, UPS is at my house everyday!! Lol

I got these from liveaquaria. they had a huge 50% off on those items plus 15% black friday promotion.
The rest I got from my lfs, pretty decent new store.
