Definitely going for a mixed reef. I'm probably more excited about the corals than the fish 😆.
As a newbie myself, if you get interested in SPS try to hold off until the tank is 5/6 months old, don't waste your money before than haha. Ask me how I know 😅

yea that sounds about right, but you can try Monti caps and digitata maybe at month 3 if you started with aged live rock and sand. I wouldn't consider acropora on a tank under a year old.

Welcome Chris! Do you have a tank setup in mind yet?

-Chris
In my mind:
  • Reefer MAX 350/425/525, still weighing multiple factors to land on a decision here.
  • Starting from dry rock, so looking at a longer process which is no problem for me as I'm a chemistry/biology nerd so the process is half the fun.
  • No fancy controller or dosing stuff in mind since that is ways down the road for me, but I've done research on the major systems.
  • My biggest concern now is actually water. I can put in an RO system in my laundry room easily enough, but I haven't solidified my system for water changes and storing large amounts of RO. A brute can and wheels is where my head is but where to store it and how to get it to the tank. Looking at some kind of simple sicce zero pump system.
  • Next biggest concern is a quarantine tank as I don't have a great place for one yet. Finding a simple solution here is going to be key so I don't have to setup a completely separate tank and incur those costs.
Other than that, just taking my time. I'm not likely to have anything going until next year, but I figured I'd start the discussion and try to meet other reefers while I'm still in the dream/plan stage.

Thanks everyone for the welcome messages!

approach Red Sea tanks with extreme caution. Weirdly, their other products are not bad at all.

Hi,

I am Chris from Montana (Flathead Valley) and I'm interested in starting my first reef tank. I kept fresh water fish when I was young, and I always wanted a reef tank. I'm currently doing research on the how to's and gear so I can spec out my tank. I found this forum while doing said research, and now I'm here.

Learn about water quality (parameters and trace elements), water movement, flow, cryptic zones, and par.

There is so much to take in. But, these will assist in years of reefing.

Enjoy the journey. Reefing is not more complicated than freshwater. Many people say it is. But in our reefs, we have so many animals to help us maintain our tanks. I never seen much help in freshwater.
