Also are you sure you didn’t get an email from R2R that was alerting you that you received a PM from the sponsor. If that’s the case you would see a preview of the message from the sponsor and it might look like it was an email from them???

I won that same contest. Politely told them to give it to the next person. Never got any emails from the company though. Not sure what happened in this case.

I think it's because I accepted the gift card. But, I had no idea that was a requirement, and I didn't give them my email. Had they said, you don't get the gift card if we can't have your email, I would have said the same thing as you did. I feel like they used my acceptance of the gift card as an excuse to take my email and sign me up for their mailers.

I have given up trying to live behind a screenname on social media. I don't sign up for much but when I do I know just one more bunch of people will now have my "information" and I expect that they will exploit it for business purposes, hopefully legitimate.

I accidentally started to fill out an on line questionare because I wanted to look at a car for sale. I stopped before I finished, but it was too late. I bought another car the next day and was getting calls and texts for a few weeks until I spoke with the last person who called and told them I already bought another car and asked them to please remove me from the list. I think I escaped, but I don't have any hope that I can live in the shadows with my work cell phone and computer here at the house. The age of privacy ended when BigBrother Hired Bill Gates to hook us all up.

As far as my issue, R2R is on it. We'll see, maybe somehow I'm mistaken here, but I don't think so.

Again, not trying to make too much out of this. I was just genuinely questioning how this happened.

Now what happened to you - and I've been known to sell cars professionally at times of my life - is that before you even hit the "submit" button on the form you're filling out, the internet monkeys have already collected anything you entered into the fields of the page you were just checking out. Scarry but true.

Friends here, please know, I'm not a babe in the woods. I didn't join R2R with the email address I'd give to my grandmother (if she was still with us (and she's long gone)). But I am still wondering how these dots connect.

Well guys, I got a reply today, and I feel like I must update this thread. I'm still not happy at all, I wish I was never tagged into that stupid contest thread.

Apparently, and according to the seller in question, they use some piece of software that when I went just one time and looked quickly at their website, it collects my personal data including my email address.

That is illegal, and totally unethical business practices, and I'm not happy at all that R2R is allowing a seller here that does this.

I'm sorry, I read the Times and other websites, and have never been signed up for their email.

CAN-SPAM IS the law that says you can't add someone to an email list without their permission.

I'm just shocked by all this. Very much making me reconsider my time (and money) spent here on R2R.

Yup, that's the internet, worked in marketing for a hot minute and the information companies can get by just visiting their site is nuts. It can be SOMEWHAT avoided if you're not "logged in" to like google chrome/email etc. Similar process with Geolocation and how you can get an email from a store you were just in... I'M LOOKING AT YOU TARGET.

I'm not logged into my browser, and even if I was, that's a different email address than what was targeted here.

Needless to say, I wouldn't buy a filter sock from this seller after this.

I get it, small business is tough, but you go farther being ethical than not. They've lost me before they even had me.

If they are unethical enough to deploy software that does this, what makes you think they would be ethical enough disclose this practice to R2R?

Based on @revhtree comment about NOT selling personal info, it would appear that he is as much of a victim as you are.

Like yourself, I take great care of my personal information. I completely understand why you would be miffed by this.

I think your real target is Opensend.com as they have created this software to circumvent the law. Sbbcorals.com is equally guilty as they OBVIOUSLY know what this software does and use it anyway.
