Hey everyone, I just picked up a 4/5 inch gold maxima, over kept clams but never a maxima, do they have to be set on the rocks or can they be placed on the sand bed ? I ask because the clam came with a small piece of rock attached to the basill organ. So what should I do in this case ? I'm dont want to cut the rock off. Will it attach to the rock I placed it on ?or put it in the sand ?

I usually start mine at middle height in the tank and see what they do. Might be best to start it on the substrate until he releases then move to your intended spot.

I run lps and softies in my main so my par is not that high. My gold latched right on to the middle and has stayed put for 3 months now and counting. My blue kept going to the bottom, I moved him to my 6 and he was happy in the middle in that one.

I moved my blue one up 5 or 6 times and he kept going back down. I got the hint after that.

They tend to do good on either. Me personally, I would place it on the sandbed away from direct flow, with moderate lighting. Clams have a tendency to tilt themselves toward or away from the light, depending on the intensity. Hope this helps you some!

When I got my maxima one of the clam experts here advised me to place him higher up in the tank because they require more intense lighting and they prefer to attach to rocks. Mine has been doing well for about 5 months now following his advice
