Ranco Temp Controller Question

I am setting up my Ranco controller and was wonder if the temperature probe is salt water proof?

When I ordered mine from Ranco, they sealed the probe for me.

Both of mine have a plastic shield over the probe as Ranco says it’s not enduring when directly exposed to SW.

Sort of off-topic but I have a Ranco I have yet top setup yet. Do they need to be calibrated?

Yes, I bought some food grade heat shrink tubing and cut about 3' off and put the probe in the middle and just folded the heat shrink in half with the ends out of the water. It worked fine but I read it was totally unneeded and removed it shortly after

I have used these for close to 20 years. They are very reliable but...The probe will fail if not water proofed with shrink tubing. Without the shrink tube I have had the probe last for years but I have also had one fail at around a year.

As far as I know, that's as tight as you can tune them. I would usually see 1-2 degree degree swings with my ranco. I still use it, but I have it behind a Hydros now. I'm usually within a quarter degree nowadays.

The probes come in two flavors, one of which is titanium and is fine for saltwater. The other would need to be shielded.

You're thinking AquaLogic which is a ranco with a titanium encapsulated probe.....and a new brand sticker.

Ahhh...that's right. Ranco always defaults in my head, but AquaLogic does put their sticker on it with the titanium probe.

Actually I was looking for this, which if I'm reading it correctly, it will have a smaller operating window if it is set to C° compared to being set to F°

A change of 1 degree Fahrenheit equals a change of 5/9 = 0.56 degrees Celsius. To convert a Fahrenheit temperature to Celsius, subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9.

So setting the unit to C° it would cycle on in half the temperature it takes to operate in F°

Am I correct on this?
