Reef Factory

Honest question here, I still want to get the RF tester and just test phosphates with it. Should I do it? I don’t know if the company will be there after a few months.

Is the company there now?

There's no clear answer so far. It was supposed to be bought out but there's no clear direction about products yet. @telegraham broke the news, but I'm not sure if there's any updates since.

Ok I had thought it was pretty clear that there is currently no product support or production only that the cloud servers were still running.

I wouldn’t touch anything RF until they give an update on long term support and service

This is exactly why the hobby needs to move away from cloud based requirements and apps for everything. It’s all a ticking time bomb these companies have created

Like it or not the cloud is the future of reefing like everything these days, I personally love being able to access my tanks info anywhere on my phone and adjust anything as needed.

Sure, right up until the company goes bankrupt and you lose all access and now have a paperweight.

Multiple companies are headed down the RF path by the way.

That's why Neptune is basically non existent in Australia, an even bigger and expensive paperweight.

It's insane that they made their products to only function via cloud services. What happens if they have a major server outage and someone's equipment gets stuck in a disasteous setting while they are away, e.g., making a short term correction to kalk dosing or something. Well, maybe they wouldn't be able to correct it anyway from distance, but if they can't even make changes when they are right there, except to unplug the thing!

The equipment still works as normal during an outage, I'm currently running 4 part and our home internet was offline for a few hours but my doser still dosed as scheduled. The only thing that doesn't work is the actions if you have them set up.

Anyone tried to sniff the communication between the devices and their server? Maybe there is a way to build something on a local server, reroute the communication and check on their apps API calls.

More than likely built on a 3rd IoT party framework. Likely an MQTT stack, not a homegrown protocol. Therefore almost certainly encrypted.end to end.

That's what I would expect. In a german company you see old, plain and insecure stuff... Poland is built different I guess

You can use any of the reef factory gear without having to connect to the server or the app, to do this follow these steps.

Reset the device to factory, if it’s new no need.
Click on wifi and select the device ie RFLS12345678 which is the RF level sensor.
Enter password reeffactory.
Open internet and type in reeffactory.io, when you click enter it will open on the device and you can use it as normal.

I have tried this but one thing to note is if you set it up this way then the device will obviously not show up on the app.
I’ve since reconnected it to my tank using the server and it’s now showing in the app.

So if the RF servers do go down for good then all is not lost as you’ll still be able to control your devices manually using this method.

The owner of my LFS said he’s heard Aquaforest is very keen on buying out reef factory.
This would be great news. I just picked up a few of the ATO dosers for a huge discount and I’m loving them so far. If Aquaforest can keep these humming away I will be a happy camper.
