Hey all, I bought a small bag of reef jerky to try it. The bag states the food size is up to 10mm (1 CM). I also went to their website and there is a pic of their food with a few “chunks” in it.

My bag is all powder. Dug to the bottom, poured it out, seriously nothing bigger than a small sesame seed, and those are few and far between. It’s pretty much the consistency of reef roids. Did I get a bad batch? Thinking of getting a plank and while I know there is other food that will work with it, I like the idea of the size variation supposedly offered by reef jerky. Let me know your thoughts.

I've had Reef Jerky before, and while it wasn't quite as chunky and varied as the pictures on the website, it was still relatively chunky. Freeze-dried food tends to be somewhat brittle, so rather than getting a bad batch, you may have just received a bag that has been through more shipping trauma and was milled down to a fine powder.

You can recreate Reef Jerky pretty easily though, just pick up a variety of freeze-dried foods. Since those usually come in jars rather than bags, they tend to hold up through shipping easier. You'll just need to manually mix it up before adding it to the Plank's hopper. You'd want:

  • Ocean Plankton/Krill
  • Mysis Shrimp
  • Copepod Powder
  • Calanus Powder
  • Rotifers
  • Whatever other pellets/dry foods you want to add
It's pretty flexible. Don't make your decision about the Plank based on Reef Jerky. It's just a slightly more convenient way to fill the Plank.
