My dad used to be a mechanic, too, before he got into the sewer lining business. I guess the mechanic trade didn't pass down to me, but I do have a love for cars though!

We can’t all be Marine Biologists or Oceanographers, our lives take us on different paths sometimes. I’m a Journeyman Millwright of 20 years, basically an industrial mechanic. My super power is the ability to look at mechanical things that fail or need servicing, and figure out how to do so.

This ability and training allows me to diagnose and rectify many mechanical issues with reef tanks. I am also conditioned to perform regular maintenance routines on my tanks as well.

So my question to you is, what is YOUR profession, and how does it help you with reefing? :thinking-face:

Sheet Metal Worker/Tinsmith/Whitesmuth/Tinbanger/HVAC Guy by trade - a functional understanding of fabrication (including plumbing), controls, heat gain and heat loss.

This has lead to me installing a fan chiller system and controller for my 15gallon tank, and the design process has begun for a custom built stand with custom sump/refugium system, concealed ATO w/ resinous, and a separate quarantine/medical tank


Plan is 316L stainless steel powder coated finish.

Occurs to me I can install an auto water change system to this too lol

I was a subsea engineer &/instrument technician for 35 years in ultra deep water > 5000’.

In both of those professions, I have learned to keep it simple with fewer devices that create potential failure points. Automatic life support systems have dependable redundancies with quality control & quality assurance built into the system design.

Wow! I could not imagine doing that type of engineering in water that deep!

Subsea computers talked to surface computers, where I was on the ship. When required underwater, we used ROV & robiotics with fiber optics and multiplexing technology from the phone company as well as acoustic technology for emergency backup controls borrowed from the Navy.

Ive always set very high goals for myself in my career, and life..strived to be the best welder that I could be, every new opportunity or challenges, I've always jumped on them, and have always held myself and my work to the absolute highest standards.. I beleive the Marine corps beat that into me a long time ago, and I am thankful for that, and the opportunities that have been offered to me throughout my career... though I have worked my butt off to get there.. I think I have finally found the end point in my career, I absolutely love my job and its benefits.. but who knows... space X is right down the road lol
