Is this typical for the return chamber in a sump to be lower temp than the tank, and chambers 1 + 2? Helios heater in chamber 2 where the probe is also.

Temperature set point 78, tank temp 78, chamber 1 78, chamber 2 78.

Return chamber 76

I would be more inclined to believe that probe's calibration is off, but a fraction of a degree difference is possible.

Testing with an external thermometer. Probe from Red Sea reading 74.5.

External thermometer readings are what I posted.

I was assuming there were multiple probes and that one was reading low.

The water level for that chamber looks fine, depending on pump flow rate, sump design, and how clogged the sponge is between those last chambers I have seen up to 1 1/2" of height difference between them and I am sure others have seen more.

That does not make sense. The return chamber is downstream from the heater and so is the tank. if any chamber would possibly be a lower temp it would be the one before the heater. I would guess a read error. If the return chamber is 74.5 then the tank would also eventually be 74.5 unless lighting or power heads are providing more heat than the heater is capable of or set to.

I always put my probe in the drain side of the sump, this is the water coming directly from the display and furthest from the heater in regards to flow. I never put the probe with the heater(s) or following the heater(s). Calibrate the probe/controller from this chamber or the display. I run Helio controllers and they work nicely, but always double check calibration every 6 months, sometimes things drift over time.
