My 75g I got used came with a 30 gallon sump, and a "Rio 1100" pump.

Pump works fine, but I am assuming more water exchange is better......

What pumps should I look into upgrading to? I am finding really large (at least compared to the Rio 1100 rated at 382 gph) pumps, such as this: https://www.amazon.com/FREESEA-Subm...&sprefix=aquarium+submer,aps,238&sr=8-21&th=1
for really cheap.... rated at 1100 gph......

Would that work as a return? Is there such a thing as "too much" return?

What can your drains handle? That is the question.
I use a Sicce 3.0 on my 75. There is no reason for massive flow through your sump unless that is all the flow you have.

I generally go with 6 x tank volume through the sump. My pump is rated for 700 gph but I am probably only getting 450 to 500 with 3 feet of head.

Pumps are rated for flow without lifting the water like running in a bucket. Once they start having to lift the water they pump less volume.

Wouldn't more flow equal greater filtration via refugium? Either way, the one I looked at has terrible reviews..... I will pay more and have a pump that I worry less about.

Cant help you there I don't have any filtration on my tank. Just a skimmer.

Just make sure your drains can handle the increased flow.

Don't buy that pump for your return. Look for something reliable and intended for a saltwater aquarium. I know most people opt for the quieter adjustable DC pumps, I lean more towards something that is going to be reliable and need less cleaning like a mag-drive pump. Sicce makes a good return pump as well...

I have a hang-on over-flow box..... how will I know the amount of flow it can handle?!?

Jebao DCP series work great, completely silent, adjustable from 30% - 100% in 1% increments so you can buy oversize and tune down to what you want, easy to disassemble, cheap so get 2 and have backup.

How many drains does your box have and what size are they.
mine is for 1000 gph and has 2 x 1 inch drains.

I suspect your return pump was sized based on how much noise they could stand.

Looking now..... 5,283 GPH seems like over-kill..... but in the spirit of Tim the Toolman Taylor.... I think I'll go with it.

One..... it's cut/modified, but I would say it's a 1 inch return pipe...

Which model are you looking at? Also what drains do you have?

I have one over-flow box, with what I believe is a 1" pvc drain. The return is much smaller (I'm guessing to make it easier to get pressure to re-fill?)

I won't know for sure until I get home. I've been pretty busy with the "get the rocks in, get it heated, let the sand settle" portions of this, so I haven't really spent much time even looking at the sump yet. I still need to make 10 more gallons of water or so to finish the tank/sump fill.
