RO/DI Pressure sensor shaking and going crazy

Someone please explain this weird phenomenon.


I fill my brute with RO/DI. It has a float valve attached.

Once the brute is full and valve was activated, the RO pressure sensor will vibrate and go insane. It will make a lot of noise every 30 seconds.

It’s super obnoxious and won’t stop until I turn the ball valve on the RO line to “off”

I have the same problem. My pressure goes from 70 up to 85 down to 70. There is too much pressure for the system to handle. That's why it makes a noise. I have to turn mine off when I am done making water. I have tried pressure regulating valves, but they do not work.

I’m going to close the line as soon as I hear it make that noise from now on. Sometimes I can be a few hours late, especially if I’m letting the brute full overnight. Would that damage the pressure gauge?

How's about adding a pipe full of air, to act as a water hammer arrestor. No idea if it would work, but it's free, if you've got some RO pipe, a tee piece and a tap.

Do you mean this?

If so, replace it. They go bad after a while. It is basically just a rubber disc in between the two sides and when the pressure builds up on one side it pushes the other closed. As it wears down it can't push closed as firmly.

Oh really? I have an auto shutoff, but I’ll try replacing it. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Every standard canister ro unit I have ever seen has one. If it didn't when your reservoir filled, it would simply continuously pour water through the waistline.

I should say not all use the flat piece of rubber. Some use a coil of flat tubing. But either way the concept is the same. Once the good water side is filled, it puts back pressure on the tube which closes off the waste side and stops the water from running.

Have you recently changed your filters, if so air trapped in the system will also case the asov to act up.

I’ve had to replace my auto shutoff on a BRS RODI system at least 4-5 times in a decade or so of ownership… they do definitely go bad after a while!

I spot mine typically because I have my waste water draining to a aquaponic system, where I can actually see it spitting out of the tube… if I haven’t used my RODI all day, and water’s flowing from the waste line still; it’s time to clean or replace the auto shutoff!

They do go faulty and I've had to replace mine a couple of times.

Make note of the install direction; they can be installed backwards, and upside-down! —don’t ask me how I know!

Not really any help but I've been and RO buddy booster pump with brutes and float valves for years and have never experienced this issue.

You may not even notice if an auto shutoff valve is weeping, actually! — it’s nearly silent in many cases, and water just continuously trickles out the waste line… it could be worth disconnecting your waste line if it’s going directly to a drain, and seeing it it’s still flowing hours after the RO’s last use!

The auto shut off is eliminated with the pump I use. My drain goes into my sump crock and doesn't leak or I would hear the pump kicking on. I have no outside water coming into the sump just clothes washer and RO drain.

Mine is an older version of this one. I'm not sure if there were any changes made. I've had mine for several years and haven't had any problems.

The aquatech 8800 is a great booster pump! However, mine started spitting black bits out (large sand grain sized) into the sediment filter of my RO system 2-3yrs in! (I’m using an 80mesh commercial irrigation prefilter for the Aquatech)

I presume these are pieces of rubber or plastic from the pump itself, and membrane inlet pressure has slowly decreased from 95psi initially, to maybe 70-75psi now, roughly a decade in…

— I’m due for a booster pump replacement, and I’m sick of replacing auto shutoff valves too! (Have tried three different brands of ASO now…)
