You can bleach it, 1 part bleach 9 parts water over 24hrs will sterilize.

That’s actually not true. To kill for example encysted tomonts, it takes up to 24hrs. ;)

I have put lots of shells into my tank and all I do is put them in cold tap water in a saucepan, bring them to the boil and simmer for 10 mins or so. Cool, rinse, dry and pop in. I am by no means an expert but most bacteria and other organisms can’t survive > 65C for any length of time so this seems sufficient.

I got a nice piece off the shore in North Carolina last summer. Kept it damp on the ride home and tossed it in my sump. No problems.

Looks like a piece of rock from east coast side of Florida. Have lived in Florida all my life and lived on both coast for extended periods of time. That rock also looks like it cement based good luck lol

I’ve heard of this for shells, but wouldn’t boil a rock.....potential for palytoxins

Lol I live in Jensen, that looks like the local rock. I have not used the rock because it is cement based, but I collect old larger conch shells which are super porous for my sump. Rock is illegal to take as well, so I don’t mess with it.
