I have been having some issues with my sand bed for a while now. I have a 75g tank with sump and I changed about 45 gallons last weekend (I vacuumed the sand and everything) to see if that would help and the algae FLARED up everywhere, all over the sand bed and all over the glass. It looks like its the same type everywhere also. Its a brown/orange algae. Ive been told its could be caused by silicates in my water. Does anyone know any reliable test kits for this? My LFS has none so I would have to order online.

I also have a bucket of Phosguard that I haven't used in years so I decided to use some. I am changing 20-25 gallons tonight and this time I am NOT going to vacuum the sandbed so I can see if there are actually any results.

Is this a good plan? Anything I should be doing or not doing?

Testing your water for silicate will help you know if it's there or not.

A picture of what your describing would help. Could be dinoflagellates as well.
