I am now so tempted to keep some. My buddy is giving me a breeding pair and the more I read the more I think it is not for me, but looking at these posts and pics, maybe I should take the plunge
They key is to get captive bred, have a species only tank (I do have a pair of clowns which is not ideal, but they are not aggressive at all), and run a chiller for sure. Mine are from https://seahorsesavvy.com/, and are actually not hard to keep.

We have been keeping them very successfully for years now. One must be aware of water quality issues and temperature though. I've found that if either of those get out of whack, their health can deteriorate rapidly leading to death.

Captive bred seahorses can live to be 5 years old or so. I guess that is short compared to a clownfish or puffer that can live 15-20 years but much better than a wild caught seahorse that is lucky if it lives a year or so.
All my horses are wild caught. Going on 2 yrs

ok so I know this thread is a few years old but I was thumbing thru ( because I have a seahorse problem my wife says) to just look at some pics of ponies and came across this. Wow what beautiful colors on those seahorses I never imagined that they could get that deep of a color, what kind of breed are they I have all Erectus They get some nice deep yellow n silver colors, but nothing like that

Well the seahorse police wont come write you a ticket lol. Buuuut, alot of times one species or both end up sick because they are not accustomed to the bacteria/etc of each species. I've seen erectus and reidi do well, they look similar to kuda as well. Reidi and erectus can be found in overlapping areas in the wild.

I keep dwarf seahorses and have a herd of maybe 50 right now, all different ages. They are very difficult to keep but absolutely addictive to watch! Fortunately mine have been breeding readily in captivity.

My tiny love :3 My husband didn't want me to start a herd because he thought I'd spend all day staring at the tank. He was absolutely right. Between the gentle flowing of the ponies in the macro and the tiny twitches of the pods and bbs as they travel, it's just captivating.
