Hi all!

Wanting to know if anyone has had a copperband butterfly in a tank with seahorses. @vlangel I know you've got the go-to guide on seahorses, and I've seen that butterflies in general are considered "4", i.e., not on your life, for seahorse compatibility, but I just can't imagine butterflies being in the same category as tangs, angels and groupers. Perhaps it's because 4 just means "4 to infinity"?

Anyway, my CBB is super chill and mostly hangs in the corner watching me and waiting for me to hand feed her mysis or white worms directly to her mouth while singing relaxing songs. Well, not the latter part, but I imagine she thinks I'm coddling her.

Just looking for more info, because the results of this thought process will determine how big of a cube tank I go for.

Thanks!

I don't know about compatibility, but any fish that goes into a seahorse tank will compete with the seahorses for food. This will cause you to feed more, which will require increased filtration and water changes to compensate.

As one example, I have trained my horses to come to the feeding bowl (with pumps turned off) where they eat and I suck up any uneaten food afterwards, I do this 4 times a day! Seahorse tanks are also usually kept at 72-74 degrees, which some fish might not appreciate.

I've kept seahorses only 3 years so I'm still a beginner and still learning, I'm just sharing what I know. Good luck

Thanks for sharing your experience!

How about a CBB that doesn't eat from the water column and only takes mysis and white worms directly from your feeder pipette?... Yes, my CBB is a bit of a diva.

In any case, sounds like there is a lot of training involved with the ponies.

There are a few seahorse groups on facebook that are very active and some very experienced and knowledgeable people, its a good place for seahorse interaction and information.

Just found out that one of the founders of seahorses.org is a local to me, too.

Copperbands can get quite aggressive if they are comfortable. Mine chase after the mysis that float in column as the wavemaker pushes it around. They dont do the "hover and stare" anymore. Both my cbbs in my display will snatch mysis from my other fish if they can. I think they might be too rowdy with seahorses imo. But i guess each individual cbb is different.
