I can search when logged into the website but can't through the app.

Basically, it comes down to convenience vs. functionality. While the app and Tapatalk may be more convenient to use, you miss out on many features of our forum software. Because the people who wrote Xenforo do not fully support third party applications to be used with theirs. So, the only way to get full functionality is to log directly into the site using a browser.
