Second New DIY Two Part Recipe with Higher pH Boost

This is the recipe im talkong about:

Calcium Chloride CaCl2 - 500grams
Strontium Chloride SrCl2.6H2O - 8.3 grams
In Total Volume of 1gallon (3.8liters) including the salts.

That would come to howmany ppm for strontium?
I know these comments are older but I have read almost every page of this thread and skimmed through the rest. Where can I get the Strontium Chloride SrCl2.6H2O? Is it just any Strontium Chloride such as this from BRS

Strontium in that Seachem product is too low to match demand with calcium. It has a fixed ratio of Sr to Ca in calcium carbonate which will only vary with the Sr/Ca ratio in the water, and not so much by how it is deposited (which coral, abiotic, coralline algae, etc.).

Magnesium is more complicated. It varies with the way it is deposited, and is a lot more in coralline algae than in some corals.

For DIY, there are two reasons to add magnesium, but the incorporation rate involves a big assumption of how much is needed based on the exact organisms involved. IMO, Seachem is in tghe right ballpark for need #1 at 1 :0.05, but falls far short since it does not account for salinity changes (need #2).

1. Some magnesium is incorporated into calcium carbonate. I assumed an average ratio (by weight) of 1 for calcium and 0.065 for magnesium. Coralline can have a ratio as high as 1:0.12 . Some corals are far lower. This need for magnesium accounts for 1/3 of the magnesium I add to my recipe. Seachem uses a similar ratio to this part alone.

2. The second need for magnesium relates not to the incorporation into calcium carbonate, but the drop in magnesium when you readjust the salinity that is rising from the addition of sodium and chloride (and other counterions that are not consumed). This need for magnesium is BIGGER than the need for that incorporated. It is 2/3 of the total magnesium added to my recipe.

After adding 594 grams of baking soda (1 gallon of Recipe #1), we will have added 163 grams of sodium. In natural seawater, magnesium is present at about 12.0% of the sodium concentration (by weight). In order to match the magnesium additions to the sodium additions to leave them in a natural ratio, we need to add 12% of 163 grams, or 19.5 grams, of magnesium for every gallon of the two-part additive that we add.

Additionally, we may want to account for magnesium that is actually incorporated into the coral skeletons. For this calculation, I have assumed that the amount of magnesium incorporated is about 6.5% of the calcium level (by weight), or about 2.5% of the skeleton by weight. In the course of adding this gallon of both parts of the two part supplement, we added 141 grams of calcium, so we need to add 0.065 x 141 = 9 grams of magnesium to account for this deposition.

The magnesium parts of the recipe are designed to add enough magnesium so that it is not depleted by either of the two means described above. Because the magnesium supplement (either version) is 47,000 mg/L in magnesium, we need to add (9 +19.5) grams/47 g/L = 610 ml of the magnesium solution for each gallon of the other parts of Recipe #1.

The first one is a pre made strontium supplement from Aquaforest.
The second is a product you could use to make your own dosing solution at whatever concentration you require.

Which one you choose would depend on many things such as tank size and how often you wish to dose.

I said in the article linked above that strontium “may” be worth dosing since there at least are a few organisms known to need it. But in general I think it is a wasted effort in a reef tank and do not do it myself. Corals are not among organisms known to need it.

Thank you! I was just doing some research and wanted to know what others were using and what was correct to be researching. I am sending off an ICP test tomorrow. I just wanted to do some reading about the product. Thank you
 
In a previous thread, I posted a true two part DIY recipe:

But some folks may want to just swap the new ingredient into my 2/3 part recipe (as used by BRS, for example).

The new recipe is shown below. It has about twice the pH boost of the original recipe (#1) and should be added to a very high flow area. Initial cloudiness (magnesium hydroxide) is expected, but it should disperse and dissolve. If not, stop using it and figure out why.

Alk part

Add 283 grams of sodium hydroxide to 1 gallon of fresh water. It will get quite warm. Make sure it doesn't soften your container. This solution will contain about 1,900 meq/L of alkalinity (5,300 dKH). BE CAREFUL WITH THIS SOLUTION: IT HAS A pH ABOVE 14. Do not get it in your eyes or on your skin. Keep all reef chemicals, especially this alk part, in a way that children cannot access them.

Calcium part

Dissolve 500 grams (about 2 ½ cups) of calcium chloride dihydrate (such as Dowflake 77-80% calcium chloride or ESV calcium chloride; see below for substitutes and sources) in enough water to make 1 gallon of total volume. You can dissolve it in about ½ gallon of water, and then pour that into the 1 gallon container and fill it to the top with more freshwater. This solution has about 37,000 ppm calcium.

Magnesium part

Dissolve Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (3 cups) and magnesium chloride hexahydrate (5 cups) in enough purified freshwater to make 1 gallon total volume. There will likely be a precipitate that forms even if you fully dissolve both ingredients separately. That precipitate is calcium sulfate (calcium as an impurity in the magnesium chloride and sulfate from the Epsom salts). It is fine and appropriate to dose the precipitate along with the remainder of the fluid by shaking it up before dosing.

This solution is added much less frequently or in lower volume than the other two parts. Add 16% as much as the other two parts. Over the time you add 1 gallon of the others, 1 add 610 mL (2 ½ cups) of this solution. You can add it all at once or, preferably, over time as you choose, depending on the aquarium's size and set up. Add it to a high flow area, preferably a sump. In a very small aquarium, or one without a sump, I suggest adding it slowly.
Hi, could you please help how much dkh sodium hydroxide solution will increase in 100 liter after dosing 1 ml solution.

The original calculator is messy, confusing, and overwhelming. The Bulk Reef Supply is aesthetically pleasing, but it labels it as “liquid soda ash” despite sodium hydroxide being the same concentration

Please add a different label than recipe 1 and recipe 2. It’s very confusing to differentiate between which one is the high pH and more concentrated version. I’d personally prefer separating “soda ash” and “sodium hydroxide.” Even though they are the same concentration, it will help people feel confident that the calculator is accurate for their dosing solution. 🙂

Hi, sodium hydroxide is caustic soda not soda ash and is more potent than soda ash. I don't know if caustic soda and soda ash has same dkh value. Could you please reconfirm. Thank you. I want to dose during night time only to keep my ph stable. currently running All for Reef and two part combo in 50/50 ratio.

Hi, sodium hydroxide is caustic soda not soda ash and is more potent than soda ash. I don't know if caustic soda and soda ash has same dkh value.
The recipes are created to be equal in concentration. When making the sodium hydroxide recipe, it will match the potency of the soda ash calculator. 🙂
