Skimmer for 20 gallon?

I wanted to set up a skimmer for my 20 gallon tank, I'm not sure which one to get, I've never had any experience with them so this is a new topic for me, I just know they clean up really nicely left overs of food. I wanted to buy a sun coral and feeding them produces a lot of waste + the ammonia spikes; I really don't want to be doing so many water changes lol. Thank you!

its a 20 gallon tall tank the measurements are 24LX12WX16H, and I’m not running a sump. I have a canister filter, don’t know if that information is necessary haha.

You're going to go HOB then. I don't know how far along your tank is, but I would wait until you get a sun coral and try to feed it. If you target feed I think you'd probably be ok, if you broadcast feed that would be another story.

By having good biomedia, you should rarely see ammonia spikes that would be too much cause for concern. As long as you keep up on cleaning your canister filter you should be ok.

Just do a HOB protein skimmer. The Sicce Shark Nano Protein Skimmer 150 is great choice.

I set this tank up in may of last year so its almost a year old. I've been adding coral for the past two months and they've been doing great. I will get the sun coral soon then and start saving up for a skimmer in case the bioload is too much, since I have a small community going on. Thanks!

Probably a hob . I'll just throwing this out there. Skimmers aren't a necessity. The only tank I have a skimmer on is one with 20 fish 8 of them tangs some large so they're messy.
These two tanks run without skimmers the first one just has a aquaclear 110 hob filter.

PS I forgot i did put a little mini q skimmer on my IM 20 AIO but only because the protein slick in the back chamber was annoying.

I had someone once tell me not running a skimmer was like having my fish living in a toilet. I'm pretty happy with how my toilets look :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing: Im not anti skimmer I just don't find them a necessity. I bought into them being needed when I was new and now I have several on the shelf so I just like to let people know.

i have this skimmer on my 20 gallon reef and im happy with it. This version of the reef octopus hob is much better than the other hob they make imo. I like it because everything is outside of the tank, except a little intake and output strainer, which dont look bad in the tank.

This tank looks beautiful! It gives the illusion that it's larger than 20 gallons!
