Is there a drain nipple on the bottom of the cup? If there is run airline from the cup down to the sump/tank and then there's no issue. If there isn't a drain then maybe run it in a 5g bucket of salt water until it breaks in?

Oh I just looked up the skimmer you're talking about. Why can't you just let it run and overflow? Does it go over the edges of the tank? If so then a 5g bucket would be your best bet for break in period

Remove the collection cup and let it overflow back into the sump until it becomes responsive to adjustments.

Are you planning for the tank to have a heat problem (e.g. T5 or halide lighting) or why the requirement for extreme energy efficiency? If your tank is not going to have a heat issue, picking a skimmer (or pump) based on extreme energy efficiency is unnecessary.
FWIW this is a function of pump, not skimmer, so you could run (e.g.) an AquaC EV180 and just pick a pump that has the efficiency number you're looking for. While just one example, that's an excellent skimmer and not hard to find used. Just to say that nothing fancy is required to get a high-grade, very energy efficient skimmer. :)
If possible, use LED lighting to avoid most heat issues and simply choose the best pumps you can (often not the same as the "most efficient" and may or may not be cheaper).
Also about the Tunze skimmers...
The Comline skimmers (e.g. 9011) are molded plastic (ABS I think) instead of being cast acrylic as some people are accustomed to....I've heard these people snobbishly call these skimmers cheaply made, but I've never heard enough "legit" reports of problems to question the build quality of their products. I've got some personal experience with the Comline series and they don't seem shoddy to me at all...just different, and generally very well designed.
The 9410 is a different series and would probably have a build that is more similar to what many are accustomed to....and for around $340 it would be a good skimmer to consider. If you wanted to "buy for the future" even the 9415 comes in well under your stated $800 budget.

This is definitely normal pre-break-in behavior....skimmer emulating a volcano. ;)
As an alternative to letting it continue to over-foam back into the tank (which is fine too), you could also just block the air-intake line completely and just let water flow through the skimmer....it will still become seasoned within a short time (a few weeks at the outside most) and then you should be able to run as much air through it as you need to.

I have a 28 gal. JBJ HQI. I don't have a lot of room for a sump. thinking of putting a small one inside the stand if possible. or second choice set beside the stand. any suggestions on skimmer and size of sump tank to use and what kind of pumps do I use. New at every thing to do with sumps, LOL. I really need help.

Well I may be wrong but I think that it may be time to look for a new skimmer. I currently have a vertex in180 and it is working but I dont think its very effective. Its very hard to adjust and I either get extremely thin skimmate or none at all.. It sits in 7" sump.. I have adjusted it ffrom the very bottom of the neck to high in the neck ..
I am wondering if I decided to upgrade what I should consider upgrading to??
The footprint of the vertex maxes out my sump and would like something with smaller footprint..
Vertex 14" x10.5 x24" tall
recommendations please?

Thank you for the reply. Using LED already, just trying to be more "green" with my energy consumption. Also with a lower power draw, the longer battery back-ups would run the tank if need be. Obviously tripling the size of my current display will have some effect on my energy usage..

The water depth in the sump is 10".
I have looked at the Reef Octopus skimmers and it would require raising the skimmer. Bubble Magus and SWC are a couple of others I looked at.
What would you recommend??

I have owned several respected skimmers over the years and when I ran my SWC 160 cone in ~10" water, it skimmed well. I modified the impeller with 3m doodlebug pad material and while that modification did cause startup issues, it also caused the skimmer to pull black tar from my tank every day. It pulled much darker skimmate than my SRO 1000SSS and it pulled it much faster. Put in on a battery backup to avoid the startup issues and it was the best skimmer I have ever owned.

I have a 180g DT, 55g refugium it is not set up yet however, I would love to hear what internal skimmer would give me a good bang for my buck? Bioload will be heavy in the end so would rather start off with something a little more per gallon (maybe 250 to 300 gallon?) I hear many good things about the SRO3000 but hoping there is something a little less expensive...... Thanks in advance!

I use a RO DC Diablo 170 on my 90g and its a work horse and controllable because of the DC pump, for your tank I would use the Octopus Diablo DC 200, but you will need lots of room in your sump, big foot print.

Just wanted to let you know I pulled the trigger on the psk-1000 to replace one of the 2500's on my skimmer. I got it from avast marine and it came with the coupler I needed for it to mount right up to my skimmer. It's been running for 3 days now and I can for sure tell the difference. It started eight up and I seem to be getting a much more consistent skim. So far im pretty happy.

Thanks! Ok my sump is 15.5 x 11.5 and inside the stand is 34" tall you think the Diablo DC200 (Dim: 15"x10.25"x23.25") would fit comfortably? Does this skimmer need to be raised I have tried to look but no info anywhere? I am worried if I have to raise it up too much I won't have the room to clean the cup. Sorry just trying to make sure it will work before I buy it :0)
