Hello everyone! I installed a new Red Sea Reefer 250. Everything is going great, but after about one month we started to smell the skimmer, mainly when coming back home. I tried emptying the cup everyday, and adding some activated carbon to the cabinet, but no big change has been felt. I dont know if anyone has faced the same issue, and how you managed to solve it.

Thanks!!

if its the gunk, perhaps draining it off with a hose into a small necked container might help, or does your cup offer that option?
Yeah, that is exactly what I have been doing, and it is not much that is being drained actually.

Could it be somwthing related to how old the aquarium is? I did not need to cycle it because it was an upgrade and the rocks and filter media of the old one were all reused (tests were always all good). However, I added some new stones which still need to be properlly covered in coraline etc.

What's your filtration before the skimmer, this could be the game changer, socks or roller ? lower the load on the skimmer. If you have an over flow , cut the flow down the emergency drain to a trickle.

@ReefEco has a product called the Stink Sink that helps draw the stink out of the skimmer cup.

So, I had the same issue. I had an overflow for skimmate that stunk. The container had a hole in the top to act as a vent (so gasses wouldn't build up). So I ended up getting a small Tupperware container drilled a hole in the bottom, attached it with a small piece of Tubing to the existing hole, filling that little container with activated carbon and drilled a hole in the lid to vent. Worked like a charm. No more stink-a-roo!!!!

Same principle as the Stink Sink sounds like.

guess either my home ventilation takes care of the smell or my skimmer over flow cuts its back, only time I catch wind of it is when I clean the cup, and its bad

my overflow
